Dox Records Presents Drummer Paulo Almeida with Love in Motion Growing up in Brazil means growing up inside rhythm. It is part of daily life, in language, in communal gatherings, in religious ceremonies, and in the way music is learned and shared. On his 6th recording and full-length studio album, Almeida does not deny that foundation but neither does he rely on it. Instead of placing groove at the centre, he rebalances the roles within the music. CD AND DIGITAL FORMATS AVAILABLE ON APRIL 24, 2026 VIA DOX RECORDS (AMSTERDAM, NL) HTTPS://RECORDS.DOX.AMSTERDAM | DOX 716CD Now based in Basel, drummer Paulo Almeida approaches composition as fluidly as he moves between continents and traditions, and Love in Motion makes that process audible. The record emerged from an intensive period at the piano, where he sang through ideas before transferring them to the drum set and his band. Almeida prefers working this way. He uses his voice not as ornament but as a compositional tool, shaping and phrasing a direction before a single drum pattern is set in place. Singing has accompanied him since childhood, and here that background becomes directly perceptible. It connects naturally to how he approaches the drum set. Rather than treating it as a purely rhythmic engine, Almeida understands it as an instrument of color, contour, and melodic presence. The drums do not simply mark time; they participate in shaping it, responding to breath and phrasing rather than imposing structure. © Ula Productions This approach carried into the recording process. The album was made with musicians from Almeida’s close circle in Basel, players who understand his language and include Lorenzo Vitolo, Josh Schofield and Joan Codina with an appearance by the influential and internationally recognized Jorge Rossy. The sessions were guided by listening and collective adjustment rather than fixed arrangements. Roles shift subtly within the band, and the music unfolds through shared awareness rather than hierarchy. Within this framework, Almeida’s long-standing connection to Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal forms an essential thread. Having studied in environments where Pascoal’s music was central and collaborated with musicians from his circle, Almeida extends that lineage here, preserving the immediacy and spiritual openness that have long shaped Pascoal’s influence on him. Love in Motion presents Almeida not through a single stylistic label, but through an ongoing exploration of structure, breath, and interaction. It brings together Brazilian roots, a European context, and a clear sense of lineage, offering a focused portrait of an artist refining his language while remaining closely connected to its origins. Paulo Almeida © Yaroslav Monchak ALMEIDA ABOUT THE TUNES Burning Skin - I wrote this song during a time when I was dealing with anxiety, and one of the symptoms was a burning sensation on my skin. The melody carries a strong influence from Hermeto Pascoal, a lifelong inspiration for me. Um Sopro - This song came from reflecting on how life is like a breath - “sopro” in Portuguese. The music was inspired by Malcolm Braff conceptions, a composer I’ve also had the pleasure of playing with. Lembranças do Boi - This song was inspired by the Brazilian cultural movement Boi do MaranhĂŁo, and by impressionism, where rhythm and melody sometimes change roles. Nenhum Talvez (Hermeto Pascoal) - This song was first recorded by Miles Davis after his profound encounter with Hermeto Pascoal. As Hermeto’s music has deeply influenced me, I recorded it in his honor and invited the wonderful Swiss singer Lisette Spinnler to join me. Winter Morning - One winter morning during the album’s composition period, this melody came to me all at once. I sent it to Lorenzo Vitolo to hear his harmonic vision for it, and that’s how our first partnership began. Resilience - This piece was written during a time of reflection about the seasons in Europe. Coming from Brazil, winter was something new for me and required resilience. I also compared this idea to Les NymphĂ©as by Claude Monet - thinking that, like those paintings, a piece of music can reveal a different light each time it’s played. Saudade - “Saudade” is one of the most beautiful words in Brazilian Portuguese, and it’s hard to translate exactly. I wrote this song in a reflective moment, feeling homesick for my hometown, my friends, and my family. IpĂŞ - IpĂŞ is the indigenous name of a Brazilian tree and one of the oldest compositions on this album. For this piece, I invited the great master and friend Jorge Rossy to join us. Saci - Saci is a legendary figure in Brazilian culture - a one-legged trickster who jumps around the forest, protecting it. This song tries to capture that spirit. In the second part, I drew a lot of inspiration from Paul Motian. https://www.pauloalmeidadrummer.com TRACKS 1. Burning Skin 4.37 2. Um Sopro 6.46 3. Lembranças do Boi 5.23 4. Nenhum Talvez 5.50 5. ABOUT PAULO ALMEIDA Paulo Almeida is a Brazilian drummer, percussionist and composer based in Basel. Over the past decade he has established himself as a distinctive voice within Brazil’s instrumental music scene, combining Afro Brazilian rhythmic foundations with a highly melodic approach to the drum set. He began his musical studies in the state of SĂŁo Paulo and later continued his education at the Conservatory of TatuĂ, where he studied both classical and popular music and participated in numerous festivals. As an instrumentalist, Almeida has performed at major festivals and jazz clubs worldwide and collaborated with artists including Hermeto Pascoal, Dhafer Youssef, Guillermo Klein, Lionel Loueke, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Jorge Rossy, Anat Cohen, Ralph Alessi, FilĂł Machado and Leny Andrade. Alongside his work as a bandleader, he teaches at the Jazzcampus Basel and remains active in a wide range of projects across Europe. His discography as a leader includes Constatações (2013), Corpo e Alma (2017), Parceria (2017), Unity - Live at Bird’s Eye Jazz Club (2020), and Oferenda (2023). Paulo Almeida © Yaroslav Monchak

Relative Pitch Records Presents Fie Schouten with Open Space Improvisations based on and featuring texts from the book Espèces d'espaces/Species of Spaces by Georges Perec. CD AND DIGITAL FORMATS AVAILABLE ON MARCH 27, 2026 VIA RELATIVE PITCH RECORDS WWW.RELATIVEPITCHRECORDS.COM | RPR 1255 The new album Open Space by bass clarinetist Fie Schouten and her international ensemble, consisting of Vincent Courtois on cello, Sofia Borges on drums and actor Pierre Baux, will be released in March. The improvised music on this album is inspired and structured by the iconic 1974 book Espèces d'espaces (“Species of Spaces”) by French writer Georges Perec. The musical narrative follows the chapters and emotional development of the book. Several tracks incorporate texts from the book, recited by French actor Pierre Baux. In Espèces d'espaces, Georges Perec explores humanity's relationship with everyday and extraordinary living environments, each time from a different spatial perspective. Through Perec's eyes, the safety of the familiar and the defined becomes far less self-evident. The void, however intangible, becomes tangible. The book's chapters address progressively larger living spaces: from the bed to the room, the flat, the apartment building, the street, the city, the country, the world, and the universe. Fie Schouten says, "Perec is someone who carefully observes, and I find that fascinating. You essentially get a glimpse into how he views the world. And at the same time, he makes you think about how you could observe it yourself." Pierre Baux, Vincent Courtois, Fie Schouten, Sofia Borges (l - r) © Geert Vandepoele OPEN SPACE Music, too, generally needs space to move. It calls for openness and is thus an invitation. Being in the world is a negotiation with space – how to enter it and share it with others, a continuous search for balance. In Open Space, the ensemble members each claim their own space within the improvisations. Spontaneous impulses inspired by the text, followed by responses to one another, are central. There is a designed structure, but within it, much freedom. The musical narrative follows the book's chapters. Together with Pierre Baux, Schouten selected fragments to create a dramaturgical arc with contrasting elements: lying horizontally on a bed, the bustle of the street, philosophizing in a café where the letter "to her" still remains unwritten, through to the immeasurability of the universe. Through choices in instrumental combinations, the selection of specific clarinets, the design of textures, and the use of harmony, the different spaces with their distinct emotional charges come to life. The spoken voice tells the story in words and also provides articulation and pitch; the voice is equally part of the music. Fie Schouten © Geert Vandepoele "With Open Space, I want to communicate in a gentle yet activist way, that I wish for people to be generous with space and grant that to one another. And my language is music, so that's how I communicate it to others," Schouten explains and goes on, "I've read the book in different languages – each language gives a different character, and it's also interesting to reflect that in the music." The album Open Space is available for pre-order listening on Bandcamp. Available in-store and on streaming services on March 27. https://relativepitchrecords.bandcamp.com/album/open-space-2 TRACKS 01 SPACE [3:50] 02 the bed & the room [6:30] 03 the appartment - moving in [3:43] 04 the appartment – walls [4:04] 05 the street [2:07] 06 a letter [4:04] 07 the neighbourhood [2:44] 08 the city [5:15] 09 the country – borders [4:19] 10 UNIVERSE [3:04] All compositions by Fie Schouten, Vincent Courtois, Sofia Borges, Pierre Baux. She is known as an interpreter of composed music, and develops her own projects in improvised music, in which literature plays an important role. Schouten has been collaborating for several years with the lyrical French cellist Vincent Courtois. Their earlier project and eponymous album VOSTOK Remote Islands (2023), also inspired by literature, received widespread critical acclaim. More recently, Schouten has begun working with the versatile Portuguese percussionist Sofia Borges. Pierre Baux has been collaborating with Vincent Courtois for over 20 years and has dedicated himself to exploring the relationship between music and literature. Schouten is an in-demand musician, educator, curator and festival founder, who received numerous awards. Further info about her: https://fieschouten.nl/about/bio/

Guitarist Bobby Broom Celebrates Jazz Titan (And Mentor) Sonny Rollins With "Notes of Thanks," Set for May 1 Release by Steele Records Album Features Nine Compositions by the Saxophone Icon, As Interpreted by Broom's Longtime Trio With Bassist Dennis Carroll & Drummer Kobie Watkins CD Release Show: Jazz Showcase, Chicago, May 14-17   March 23, 2026 Guitarist Bobby Broom pays tribute honoring a saxophone colossus with the May 1 release of Notes of Thanks on Steele Records. The album is an exploration of the compositions of the great Sonny Rollins, in whose bands Broom recorded and toured for a combined 11 years. The guitarist is joined on the adventure by his own longtime collaborators, bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer (and fellow Rollins alum) Kobie Watkins. As it would be for any jazz musician, working with Rollins was the gig of a lifetime for young Broom. He was still a junior at New York’s High School of Music and Art when he first played with the saxophonist at Carnegie Hall, then at 20 went on the road with Rollins for six years. Though he retired in 2014, the jazz elder is still with us and well into his nineties, observing the scene as he rests on his much-deserved laurels. “I felt like now was the right time,” Broom says. “I wanted to say thank you to Sonny while he is here.” It’s a rich and remarkable thank you. Broom, Carroll, and Watkins offer a trio of Rollins’s best-known compositions (“Doxy,” “Valse Hot,” and “Pent-Up House”) along with a handful of eclectic, lesser-known tunes. These include “Alfie’s Theme”—not the Burt Bacharach standard, but the bluesy piece Rollins wrote for the 1966 film, here rendered in a tough, stripped-down performance; “Kim,” a fairly obscure piece from the 1980s, which features Broom in one of his most cogent and acrobatic solos; and “Paul’s Pal,” a chipper, calypso-seasoned tune from early in Rollins’s reign over the tenor kingdom. (After all, what Rollins tribute would be complete without a calypso?) Though all of the tunes feature extended solos by the guitarist, Broom’s collaborators are not to be underrated. Carroll and Watkins do extraordinary work. The bassist contributes the album’s only original, the thoughtful ballad “Me Time,” and the drummer plays with remarkable subtlety, though offers tantalizing hints of his formidable chops while trading fours with Broom on “Strode Road” and eights on “Pent-Up House.” Indeed, Notes of Thanks is a studio reunion of sorts for Broom’s working trio, who haven’t recorded a full album as a standalone unit since 2009’s Bobby Broom Plays for Monk. Deeply rewarding as it is for the players and their fans, the record is also a clever reminder that its subject, Sonny Rollins, was in his own right a pioneer of the modern jazz trio format. It’s the kind of fine detail that makes Notes of Thanks an extraordinary homage to and by extraordinary musicians. Bobby Broom was born January 18, 1961, in New York City’s Harlem. At ten years old, he heard one of his father’s records—by organist Charles Earland—touching off his lifelong love affair with jazz. By the time he was sixteen, Broom was attending New York’s prestigious High School of Music and Art and gigging with pianist Al Haig; a year later, Sonny Rollins hired him to play at Carnegie Hall and invited him on tour. Broom elected to finish high school, went on to attend Berklee College of Music, then, in 1981, accepted Rollins’s job offer. By that time, Broom had also signed with GRP Records and recorded 1981’s Clean Sweep, which was a crossover jazz success. But rather than settle into a comfortable career in the emerging genre of “smooth jazz,” Broom stayed on the road with Rollins until 1987, then settled into the rich Chicago jazz scene and continued his international work as a sideman for other jazz luminaries such as Earland, Kenny Burrell and Miles Davis. In the 1990s Broom recorded two quartet records, but by 2000 had decided to make a guitar-bass-drums trio his primary outlet. He solidified a lineup with bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Kobie Watkins with 2006’s Song and Dance, followed by 2008’s The Way I Play and 2009’s Bobby Broom Plays for Monk. (The three came together again for 2011’s Upper West Side Story, although Chicago drummer Makaya McCraven sat in for Watkins on three tracks.) His highly successful organ ensemble the Deep Blue Organ Trio (1999-2014) recorded four albums and was updated with his current organ group the Organi-Sation, recording 2024’s Jamalot and 2018’s Soul Fingers. Other recent Broom albums include the augmenting of the trio with pianist Justin Dillard on 2022’s Keyed Up and 2025’s More Amor – A Tribute to Wes Montgomery with the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. Broom returns to his unadulterated guitar-trio for Notes of Thanks, in homage to one of the most important figures not only in jazz history, but also in Broom’s own life. The Bobby Broom Trio will appear at the Jazz Showcase, Chicago, 5/14-17. Broom will also appear in the International Jazz Day All-Star Global Concert, taking place on 4/30 at the Chicago Lyric Opera House. >>Why Another Tribute? Bobby Broom explains. Pelt observes in his liner notes that the social realities “in these United States all but force you to constantly examine the virtues and contributions of your own community, if only for the sake of positive reinforcement… and the music I've produced herein for the world to hear seeks to be a part of that positive reinforcement.” That perspective, echoed in his multi-volume book series Griot: Examining the Lives of Jazz's Great Storytellers, anchors a program that balances cultural heritage with musical innovation. Pelt's compositions flow effortlessly across straight-ahead, neo-bop, spacious ballads, post-impressionist color, and the tasteful integration of electronics. Legendary bassist Buster Williams and acclaimed drummer Lenny White bring deep authority and experience, giving the album its solid grounding, while pianist Orrin Evans supplies a modern harmonic foundation that keeps the music vibrant and alive, as Lasse Corson sprinkles in subtle electronic colors. The result is a thrilling, forward-looking statement from a trumpeter and composer whose voice continues to grow with purpose, presence, and unmistakable personality. - RJO Like our stuff? Yelena Eckemoff ABBA Museum IMPACTING NOW! Format: Jazz, Rock “With Rosendals Garden, Eckemoff ventures into particularly fertile terrain: a refined form of symphonic jazz that is as intricate as it is welcoming. The compositions are sophisticated in construction, the arrangements layered and harmonically adventurous, yet nothing feels hermetic. “Accessibility, in her hands, is not compromise but strategy. In an era when jazz often competes for attention through volume or technical spectacle, Eckemoff opts instead for narrative patience and emotional architecture. “Within the broader contemporary jazz landscape, Eckemoff occupies a distinctive space. While American jazz often leans into rhythmic assertiveness and European jazz sometimes drifts toward abstraction, she forges a synthesis: structurally rigorous yet narratively intimate, classically grounded yet improvisationally fluid. As a composer in a field still disproportionately defined by male bandleaders, her authority feels neither declarative nor defensive, it is simply assumed.” For interviews, review copies, or media inquiries, contact: Harry Eckemoff info@yelenamusic.com www.yelenamusic.com www.landhproduction.com Follow Yelena Eckemoff: https://hypeddit.com/eckemoff/rosendalsgarden  
