  1. Thousands.

Suppose a billionaire said to a jazz artist/group, "I like your music so much, if you want I'll pay to have a promo copy of an album of yours sent to every household in America."

The artist wouldn't get any money out of it. Would he accept the offer? I don't think that it would be irrational for him to do so.

Maybe not his current album. Maybe a backlist album from five years ago. But I can see the appeal of having your music in every household in America.

  2. Never mind the extravagance. I find the job description to be repugnant.

I also find repugnant the view common among universities that they need to increase their endowment to keep up with other universities' endowments, without concrete plans of how the money will be spent. That's just simple greed, which I think proper universities should teach their students to reject.

  3. Since I'm not an NFL fan, I haven't been watching the games, and I don't have an opinion of the quality of the refs.

However, it seems to me that the use of replacement refs (in any league) invites widespread skepticism among fans, and thus tarnishes the image of the games and the league.

I truly don't understand why the NFL is penny-pinching with the refs. The best refs in any sport are harder to replace than most of the players.

  4. sk, I placed an order for two books with Amazon proper Sept. 3 which still hasn't shipped yet.

I'm not sure, but I suspect that one of the books is a lulu print-on-demand, which I think holds things up.

My credit card order of Sept. 3 was debited today, and the Amazon website changed my listing from "Not Yet Shipped" to "Shipping Soon".

  5. Congrats Jim!

I dropped my cable I think the last week of December of 1991. I would like to watch SpeedTV for the sports car races, and ESPN3.com for its various offerings, but those two things don't justify the price of cable for me.

I spend my entertainment money on CDs, books and DVDs, and I enjoy all of them at my leisure rather than according to somebody else's schedule. Of course, I also find entertainment on the internet, but I consider that to be a necessity. It's a great savings for me on a monthly basis, so totalling my savings up over 20 years would I'm sure be an impressive figure.

In regard to exercise equipment and losing weight, I highly recommend the NordicTrak. They used to advertise heavily in USA Today, but I'm not even sure if they are still in business nowadays.

  6. BfB, I didn't see any link on your app for orchestras. I was particularly looking for Maynard Ferguson's Roulette recordings that might be on Spotify. Would your Blue Note app include EMI non-Blue Note labels like Roulette?

When I checked Maynard not using the Blue Note app, I saw the one Roulette that I have, Letter from Birdland, but there are many albums, and no indication (that I saw) of what label they are on. Can anyone point out other Maynard Roulette albums? Thanks!

  7. This year's Grand Final will be this Friday night (9:30 pm pacific, 12:30 am eastern), Saturday afternoon in Australia.

My favorite team the Hawthorn Hawks had a good year, and finished first in the regular season with a 17-5 record. They will face the Sydney Swans, who finished third with a 16-6 record.

I assume that the game can be heard at the 3AW link in post #50 above. I recall last year or the year before that I found a second broadcast of the game on the internet as well. I also expect that it will be shown on ESPN3.com.

  8. Montreal Alouettes 31....Toronto Argonauts 10

Not an interesting game. Ricky Ray hurt his left knee in the first quarter and never came back. Brandon Whitaker's replacement Victor Anderson had a good game and scored two touchdowns.

Swayze Waters missed a 41 yard field goal, and Montreal's Trent Guy returned it 129 yards for a touchdown. My first thought was that that would have to tie the league record, because you can't return the ball 130 yards. But of course the league reduced the depth of the end zone from 25 to 20 yards in 1986, and there were two returns for more than 130 before then. So this is tied for the third longest return.

    Saskatchewan Roughriders 30....Calgary Stampeders 25

Good game with an exciting fourth quarter. The game was tied at 10 at halftime. The Riders took a 27-13 lead into the fourth quarter and seemed to have the game in hand. But the Stamps scored a field goal, a touchdown with a two-point convert and a single to close the score to 27-25 with 2:35 left. The Riders got a field goal which forced the Stamps to have to go for a touchdown which they couldn't do as time ran out.

  9. British Columbia Lions 19....Edmonton Eskimos 18

Great game! A defensive battle. The Eskimos led for most of the game, but BC took the lead twice in the fourth quarter. Paul McCallum kicked a 46 yarder with 1:01 left to win it.

Steven Jyles started for the Eskimos, and had another good game. Kerry Joseph was scratched, though I'm not sure the extent of his injury.

  10. Atlantic for the later 60s

Is that for the recordings of Les McCann, Hank Crawford, David Newman, Roy Ayers, Herbie Mann etc or other stuff?

    MG

MG, I'm thinking Mose Allison, Herbie Mann, Roland Kirk; and the Herbie Mann labels Vortex and Embryo which had Miroslav Vitous, Chick Corea, Attila Zoller and others.

  11. Winnipeg Blue Bombers 34....Hamilton Tiger-cats 12

    http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfl/news/news.aspx?id=4531210

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/pierce-helps-bombers-down-hamilton-for-third-win-of-the-season/article4561170/

I love windy games in Regina, Winnipeg and Calgary! Tonight the wind was blowing 40-60 kph (24-36 mph) which made kicking into the wind difficult, but the kickers did their jobs on attempts inside 40 yards.

It was a close game for 45 minutes, and the Bombers led 16-12 after three. But they ran away with it in the fourth with 18 unanswered points.

Buck Pierce returned after missing eight games. The Bombers are 11-5 in the last 16 games that Pierce has started, so I guess there is a ray of hope for them as long as Pierce is in the lineup.
