  1. Add Chet Baker to the list of singer-trumpeters...he and Armstrong are probably the two who are best and equally known for their playing and singing.
  2. Wow! Congrats on the great snag! If I ever find such a deal, I'll post a pic of the set ...
  3. Ahhhh, looking back on November...it's been a good month of listening for gdogus. What I can remember spinning: Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965 (8 disc box) Miles Davis - A Tribute to Jack Johnson Wayne Shorter - The Soothsayer Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing Eye Jelly Roll Morton - 1926–1930 (5 disc JSP box) Chick Corea - A Week at the Blue Note (6 disc box) Chick Corea - Three Quartets Joe Lovano - From the Soul Lee Morgan - Search for the New Land Art Pepper - Gettin' Together Art Pepper - Smack Up Art Pepper - Intensity McCoy Tyner - Sahara McCoy Tyner - Super Trios Shelly Manne and His Men - At the Blackhawk Volumes 1-5 Shelly Manne and His Men - At the Manne-Hole Volumes 1 & 2 Thelonious Monk - With John Coltrane Yusef Lateef - The Sounds of Yusef Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds Yusef Lateef - The Centaur and the Phoenix Bill Evans - The Last Waltz: Final Recordings, Part 1 (8 disc box) Bill Evans - Consecration: Final Recordings, Part 2 (8 disc box) Vince Guaraldi - Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus Wynton Marsalis Septet - Live at the Village Vanguard (7 disc box)
  4. I don't think anyone's mentioned two sax/bass/drum trio albums by Branford Marsalis: Trio Jeepy (1988; featuring Milt Hinton or Delbert Felix on bass, and Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums) and The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born (1991; Bob Hurst on bass and Watts on drums). The latter album does have a couple of cameos by Courtney Pine (tenor) and Wynton Marsalis, but it's almost all the sax trio. Both are terrific, exploratory sessions. And the album covers match in a cool way, too... ....
  5. I'm frankly amazed that Shorter's Night Dreamer hasn't been remastered and released as an RVG. It is his first Blue Note and a remarkable album - overshadowed by Juju and of course by Speak No Evil among the earlier BNs, but great in its own right. I can understand wesbed's position, and have gone through periods during which that was my policy as well, but then sometimes find that I'm not happy with the remastering job (rarely the case with RVGs, though).
  6. I stuff the bird, and then the bird stuffs me. Fair enough. Happy Thanksgiving!!
  7. I can't comment on the big box either, nutty, but I've thought about saving for it to be sure - more to have it all, not as a sound issue. As of now, I've got older Cole Porter and Ellington stand-alone songbooks, and a newer, remastered stand-alone Harold Arlen songbook. The Arlen has somewhat fuller sound, but honest to god, they all sound great to me. I do sort of like the cardboard digipak on the newer editions of the individual songbooks, but wonder how they'll stand up in the long term compared to standard jewel boxes. Good documentation all around.
  8. Welcome here, gdogus! ubu Thanks so much for the welcome, y'all. The recent flame wars over on AAJ did make it an uncomfortable place to be, even if I wasn't involved in any of it. But maybe "refugee" is too strong a word. "Expatriate"? Remains to be seen. Let's just say that I've cosen to "live abroad" for a while... B)
  9. Mainly 50s-60s hard and post-bop here, though I've got a major soft spot for piano trios (Bill Evans...ahhhh! Keith Jarrett Trio...ahhhh!), as well as tenor/bass/drums trios (e.g., Sonny Rollins's Freedom Suite, Branford Marsalis's Trio Jeepy and The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born) and...well...the mood varies, as others have said.
  10. Given that, I think I'll try hanging out here for a while, if that okay with you good folks... Yes, something of an AAJ refugee here. A few of you guys may know me, and to those who don't yet - hey now!
  11. I've decided to stick with EMusic, albeit on the lowly 40 tracks/month plan. I do hope the new arrivals will continue to flow in, and that they'll make it worth while.
