Bellinger was reportedly seeking $150-200 million, so he ended up settling for roughly half of that.  I wouldn't be surprised to see similar short-term, high-AAV deals with opt-outs being taken by the remaining members of the Boras Four. In any event, happy for Cubs fans that he landed back with them--seems like a good fit for both team and player.

Highly-touted Yankees prospect Spencer Jones hit a 470-foot home run in his spring training debut today, so I’m happy about that. The new uniforms are an aesthetic disaster.  And I strongly suspect the Boras Four are all going to have to lower their asking prices significantly.

My local jazz record shop in Manchester UK (Decoy Records) had a look and out from under the counter popped a Larry Young Mosaic set - AND a box of the Other Side of the 1500 Series (Japanese LPs) 

I went home happier than I had ever felt trading records. Larry Young I had only heard I think 3 tracks of and there was all his stuff and his sides with Grant Green ....and then that Japanese Blue Note set.

 

Still have the Larry Young set - my favourite still. 

Bought all the Blue Note boxes and loved ringing up from the UK (as fast as I could as it cost a fortune) to place an order for the next one or ones I had missed. 

I just finished listening to that Larry Young set all the way through for the first time in many years. Such an outstanding collection, with lots of Grant Green to boot. I also enjoyed the post-Unity sessions more this time around than I did when I first got the set in the late 1990s… just played “Evening” on my afternoon show a few days ago as a result of my revisitation.

Nate Chinen's The Gig is the first one that comes to mind.  I've also enjoyed what I've read from Hank Shteamer and Ethan Iverson's Substacks... lots of good ones springing up these days.

[Chet Baker/Jack Sheldon: Perfect Harmony]

Another press release for yet another forthcoming Jazz Detective release:       I’m so happy to be working with Jazz Detective Zev Feldman on In Perfect Harmony: The Lost Album, previously unheard musical treasure. A studio album from 1972 featuring West Coast trumpet icons Chet Baker and Jack Sheldon, the album will be released via LP on Record Store Day, April 20, 2024 with the CD and downloads to follow on April 26.   Recorded in Tustin, California in 1972 with pianist David Frishberg, bassist Joe Mondragon, drummer Nick Ceroli and guitarist Jack Marshall, the recordings were produced by Jack Marshall and Hank Quinn. The tape comes from the personal archives of the legendary film producer Frank Marshall (Jack Marshall's son) – The Last Waltz, the Indiana Jones and Bourne Identity franchises, Gremlins, The Goonies, Back to the Future, Jurassic World, The Color Purple and countless others. Frank Marshall notes, "The tapes got packed away in our garage on Lido and were never released.  Until now.  After 50 years in storage, we can finally enjoy and celebrate this long, lost gem of an album.”     Co-produced by Zev Feldman and Frank Marshall, the all-analog recording is mastered by Matthew Lutthans at the Mastering Lab directly from the original master tape reel and manufactured at Memphis Record Pressing. Another great find from the brilliant producer Zev Feldman, Mal Waldron & Steve Lacy: The Mighty Warriors: Live in Antwerp features a previously unreleased live concert recording from Waldron and Lacy with Reggie Workman and Andrew Cyrille. The 180-gram vinyl limited edition 2-LP set will be available via Elemental Music on Record Store Day, April 20, 2024 with the 2-CD set, streaming and downloads to follow on April 26. The package includes reflections by producer Zev Feldman and acclaimed jazz writer Adam Shatz, as well as the testimonies of the concert’s bassist Reggie Workman, and drummer Andrew Cyrille. The extensive booklet also contains interviews with Jane Bunnett, David Virelles, David Liebman, Vijay Iyer, Evan Parker, and Mal Waldron’s widow, Hiromi Waldron, as well as never before seen photos from the actual concert taken by Hugo Peeters. The music was transferred from the original tapes (preserved by Patrick Wilen, son of legendary saxophonist Barney Wilen), mastered for vinyl by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and pressed by Memphis Record Pressing.
