  1. He's a D.C. guy. (originally, at least.) Hadley Caliman? Possibly Bud Shank?
  2. Lloyd McNeill? (This is Google talking, not me!)
  3. Dave Valentin? (Could def. be a "Latin" player, I'm thinking...)
  4. OK, I'll go for the obvious (to me) guy that I havent yet mentioned - Paul Horn. Is this from Altura do Sol? Edited to add: Just as an aside, whoever this is reminds me a lot of Brazilian flutist David Ganc, who studied with a French teacher and who has that gorgeous, liquid "French" tone. (Marvelous player, too.) But I know it's not him.
  5. Think you're tricky, don't you, Ptah?! One more time: Or Bobbie Humphries, or even Prince Lasha? [j/k!]
  6. Sam Most? It cannot be Tabackin, although he and Toshiko did some duo stuff - IIRC - on his Rites of Pan LP, and she played some kinda dismal keys on a small group album under her own name. (On Inner City, I think.) Gah!!!! * Is there some kind of outside chance that it's Charles Lloyd?! Or Bobbie Humphries, or even Prince Lasha?
  7. OK, so... is it not any of the other guys whose names I just added? [never mind] And why am i thinking that could be Kenny Barron on keys? (I'm probably half-crazy by this point, making wild, scattershot guesses... ) I'm running out of flutists' names here... it sure ain't Dolphy or Bobby Jaspar, though!
  8. Disc 2, tk. 3 - could this be from a CTI recording (as suggested above)? If so... any chance it might be either Joe Farrell or Jerome Richardson? Or - possibly - Hermeto Pascoal? or maybe Jeremy Steig? Damn; this cut - and the klez-like one - are bugging the hell out of me!
  9. Hmm... It sounds so much like something that would be issued on Tzadik, or else (maybe) Winter & Winter, or - stretching it a bit - Greenleaf...
  10. Easier to link, maybe... We'll see! * OK - could this track be from David Krakauer's Music at the Winery? Or one of Koby Israelite's Tzadik albums? (He has everything but the kitchen sink on those, re. tunes, styles *and* instrumentation...)
  11. Yes - and Dancing at the Volcano wasn't one of them... I need to try and re-do this later. That site can be pretty flaky.
  12. Another guess - is Disc Two, tk. 7 from this disc, by any chance? Or maybe this? There are a few things here that are really throwing me.... Re. Mario Rivera - d'oh!!!
  13. Outside chance guess for sure - Disc One, tk. 6 is something by Ray Anderson with Ibrahim Electric, maybe???
  14. De nada! I was being pretty obsessive about it myself - those opening phrases (piano and cl.) have been stuck in my head for a long time.
  15. hmm... the plot thickens!
  16. I'm gonna take a stab at Disc One, tk. 2 - I think it could be from Dave Douglas' album Freak In, but I'm not 100% sure...
  17. That is all correct. You win this: I'm both honored and quite humbled, HP! Thanks for putting together such a terrific BFT. Now if i can *just* nail Disc Two, tk. 7, I'll be a very happy gal!
  18. Disc Two, tk. 5 - "Mr. B.C.," from Sphere Music (I think!) Originally issued on JMT. Ralph Peterson kills! I could kick myself for having sold this album...
  19. You got me! None of the discs I've been thinking of... not even discs by Uri, though I could be wrong there. (I'm not that familiar with his work.) Edited to add: OK - Disc Two, tk. 6 reminds me of "Basquiat" from Don's album Romance with the Unseen.
  20. None of those guesses are correct. Yeah... and see my adds. This has me thinking - for whatever reason - that someone is playing "in the style of," but I can't pin it down. (Nick Brignola was very good at doing brief imitations "in the style of," which is what made me think of that whole idea...) Edited to add: Coolbone! Makes complete sense! Disc 2, tk. 5 - if Don Byron, it might be Uri Caine. maybe from a JMT release? Or it could be Edsel Gomez...
  21. I don't think this is right, but I'll give it a shot: Disc One, tk. 5 might be Mary Lou Williams, although Jaki Byard and Roland Hanna both come to mind - and I'm not sure why! There are some chord voicings on this cut that I don't think would be used by people like Willie The Lion... too "modernistic," i think. But I dont think MLW did that doubling thing (in octaves) very much, unless she was demo'ing older styles.
  22. Hmm... funny that MG and I both linked to the same Booker album. (I didn't check his link before I posted mine.) As for that trumpet skronk, I have other thoughts, but have to take a little more time before I commit. I really like the Booker cut, so would definitely like to get a copy of whatever album it's from. The brass band "Saints..." with rap is harder than I'd initially thought it might be, too - none of the usuals (Rebirth, Dirty Dozen, Tremé, etc. - or even bands that aren't from there, like Youngblood).
  23. Disc Two, tk. 11 - That isn't François Rabbath, is it? Or Barre Phillips?
  24. My apologies to all for rushing ahead with answers and not following the standard format.... I wasn't quite sure how to go about this. (Even though I've been reading Downbeat BFTs for years and years.)
  25. Y'know, the composer credit in the liners to "Jazz Poet" puzzled me for years, because I knew it wasn't by Ivan Lins. but I never could quite place who *did* write it. (Though I remembered hearing a couple of different versions of it on one or another of the Brazilian shows that used to be broadcast in the D.C. area.) The interwebs bring us Discos do Brasil, and the mystery is solved: Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. (Who recorded it 1st, back in the day...)
