  3. Homeland security is officially defined by the National Strategy for Homeland Security as "a concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize the damage and recover from attacks that do occur" http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/homeland-security/ Guilt or innocence aside, if it is true that Bill Barton was arrested by "Homeland Security" for trafficking in child pornography, then HS would seem to have strayed a long way from its mandate.
  4. No if about it regarding the names you cite, Valerie. Puilling out the old bi-sexual card is just plain naïve—perhaps with a bit of wishful thinking or denial thrown in. You have been on the scene long enough to know that any gay jazz musician had to play the game and at least appear to be bi-sexual, but even that was not accepted—except when it came to women. For some reason, perhaps because many men like to see two women make love, same-sex affairs (or just dancing and holding hands) was quietly acceptable. If a man wants to have sex with another man, and enjoys it, you can call him a grapefruit, bi-sexual, curious, or whatever.. he is as gay as the man who expresses his desires openly. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/23/health/23bisexual.html?scp=1&sq=bi-sexual&st=cse

  13. Funny you should say that. About 40 years ago one of the major meat packers (I keep thinking Hormel, but I don't think it was Hormel) decided to start producing ice cream. Their ice cream recipe called for lots of purified lard for extra smoooothness. It was a bust.
  14. That's really interesting. The "black string-band" tradition also produced guitarist Arnold Schultz, a somewhat overlooked giant of country music who was cited by both Ike Everly and, more importantly, Bill Monroe as an influence on their styles. http://blindman.15.forumer.com/a/arnold-schultz_post1215.html Allen, do you know of any research into Schultz? I don't think he ever recorded.
