  1. Wow -- fantastic find. What were the circumstances around the original creation of the portfolio? Do you know who did the printing and the size of the edition? "The New York Collection for Stockholm, Experiments in Art and Technology" is the full name of the portfolio, and the artists "donated" their work. The edition was 300 copies. I read all the printed material that came with the portfolio, but there was no further explanation.
  2. I was perusing the book listings on ebay, looking for art books, and came upon someone selling a portfolio of signed graphics from thirty of the heavy-hitters of New York art world of the 1970s--Twombley. Warhol, Rauchenberg, Noland etc.; it was being sold as a book, and the description said nothing about artist signatures. To make a long story short I bought it for the opening bid, 30.00, a dollar a print, and within a week of receiving it in the mail I dispatched it to Rago Auction House; it will appear in their post WWII art auction in May with a starting bid in the 6 to 9 thousand dollar range.

  17. No jazz producer was perfect, least of all Leonard Feather, who marred a few jazz recording dates with his clunky piano playing, and marred even more with his ersatz blues lyrics.

  19. My advice would be to buy the Collected Works. IMO Balliett was at his best when writing about the generation of musicians that developed before the 2nd World War, musicians who were still active when Balliett began his writing career in the mid 1950s. You could buy those early books individually, but some of them can be fairly pricey, whereas the Collected Works can be purchased used for a modest price.
