  4. The owner of this collection is being entirely too sentimental about it. He should recognize that his father's tastes were fairly idiosyncratic, and that a perfect fit for this collection--or even just a buyer--is unlikely to be found, especially given the costs of packing and shipping. I have a fairly strong interest in more traditional jazz styles, but there is little here that I'd want to add to my collection. My advice would be to donate the whole thing to a local library sale, and be happy in the knowledge that a few trad-jazz buyers will be pleased with their good fortune.

  12. Thank you for posting this. It's a wonderful story. I found this anecdote to have a certain resonance-- Collectors Weekly: Can you give us an example of a super-collector or lunatic? Cuscuna: My friend Larry Cohn is one of them. Larry’s got maybe 27 or 28 copies of “Blue Train,” all different—different pressings, different countries. He says, “There was a run of ‘Blue Trains’ where side A has the Lexington Avenue address on the label and side B has West 63rd Street.” I said, “Larry, all that means is they ran out of one label and not the other and then the plant reprinted the labels, and when they got an order for more ‘Blue Trains,’ they grabbed a box of labels. There was no thought involved in this. It’s just all physical stuff.” And he said, “Yes, I know, but I find it fascinating.” I said, “Okay.” He’s deep into that. In fact, he and Fred Cohen of the Jazz Record Center are about to put out a Blue Note collectors’ guide that includes a lot of that stuff.

  17. Mr. Reynolds belonged to the circumspect, virtually invisible world of “backroom boys” who help magicians refine their acts. In “Merlin,” a 1983 Broadway musical starring Doug Henning, he figured out how to make a live white horse and rider vanish into thin air. In “Blackstone!,” a 1980 Broadway show, he helped Harry Blackstone Jr. bifurcate his wife with a buzz saw. He was producer, director, magic creator and magic consultant for television, stage and film productions from Hollywood and Broadway to London, Paris and Hong Kong. He was chief magic consultant to Mr. Henning for all eight of his annual one-hour network magic specials. The first, in 1975, attracted 50 million viewers. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/08/arts/08reynolds.html?ref=obituaries
