  1. The first Miles side I bought was in 1975, and it was Bitches Brew. Not exactly an ideal introduction to his music, but I could have done worse I suppose!
  2. How far has his star fallen? Even this story is shocking. Talk about wheels off! Police: Former Ohio State star Clarett arrested with 4 guns in SUV August 9, 2006 AP - Aug 9, 6:25 am EDT COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Maurice Clarett was arrested early Wednesday after a highway chase that ended with police using Mace on the former Ohio State running back and finding four loaded guns in his truck, a police spokesman said. Officers used Mace to subdue Clarett after a stun gun was ineffective because the former Fiesta Bowl star was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, Sgt. Michael Woods said. "It took several officers to get him handcuffed," Woods said. "Even after he was placed in the paddy wagon, he was still kicking at the doors and being a problem for the officers." Clarett was being interviewed at police headquarters. Authorities planned to charge him with carrying concealed weapons and other counts, Woods said. Clarett made an illegal U-turn on the city's east side and failed to stop when officers tried to pull him over. Clarett was being pursued by police while driving eastbound on Interstate 70 when he darted across the median and began heading west. Clarett drove over a spike strip that was placed on the highway, flattening the driver's side tires of the SUV, Woods said. Clarett exited the highway and pulled into a restaurant parking lot, where officers removed him from the SUV after he failed to obey numerous orders to exit the vehicle, Woods said. After Clarett was placed in a police van, officers discovered a loaded rifle and three loaded handguns in the front of the vehicle, Woods said. Woods said he did not know where Clarett got the guns or why he had them and that federal authorities plan to trace their ownership. Clarett, 22, is currently awaiting trial on two counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of robbery and one count of carrying a concealed weapon in a separate case. Authorities said he was identified by witnesses as the person who flashed a gun and robbed two people in an alley behind the Opium Lounge in the early hours of Jan. 1. Clarett scored the winning touchdown in the second overtime to lead Ohio State to the 2002 national championship, the school's first since 1968. But that was the last game the freshman played for Ohio State. He sat out the 2003 season after being charged with misdemeanor falsification on a police report, then dropped out of school. He sued to be included in the 2004 NFL draft and lost in court. A surprise third-round pick in the 2005 draft, he was cut by the Denver Broncos during the preseason. 5. Amen Greg! Thanks for remembering this! This was my first Urbie record: Yes, he did have a green trombone. That recording is pretty dated sounding now, but contains some great trombone playing. He uses the "Varitone" octave-doubling effect, the same thing Sonny Stitt dabbled with. That I could've done without, especially considering his beautiful sound. I've always liked this one a lot: Urbie was the first trombonist I heard who really blew me away. Happy Birthday Urbie! Green Power was my first Urb record too. When I was in jr college, he came down to play with our band. His charts were sent ahead so we could practice them. I remember the leader asking me to read Urbie's parts. I was like "WHOA, this is some tough shit!" Watching him live blew me away. He was in such total control of his horn. He sat on a barstool as he played. And he was so damn casual about it, allthewhile playing unbelievably hard lines! I remember him playing on a blues, as he played a few choruses up around 1st - 3rd position. But then he started playing complete choruses using extended alternate positions, and perfectly in tune. I had never seen anyone really utilize alternates before...at least not to that degree. I got him to autograph the inside of the Green Power jacket. I still have that record. Cheesy record? Sure it is by today's standards, but it was very cool back then. And that other LP you scanned? WOW! I have that one too. Listening to that makes me suspect that Watrous did a lot of listening to Urbie. His ballad mastery is phenomenal; no less so than anything I heard Bill play.
  6. We used that same code in college too! Small world.
  7. My CD was reviewed by Cadence for free. I subsequently made a distribution deal with NorthCountry which is of course their sister company. I had heard through the grapevine that this sort of 'buy an ad, get a review" policy was implicit with JazzTimes. As an independent self producer, I have found it damn near impossible to get reviews. I sent out numerous packets to no avail, twice to JT, and neither submission was even acknowledged (However, I did start getting advertisement packets, describing rates, etc for upcoming education issues, etc) The only review I can hang my hat on - which thank god was a very flattering one - was the Cadence review. I've always felt that Cadence was honest in their dealings, because I have read scathing reviews of artists whose CDs were at the time distributed by NorthCountry.

  10. I wasn't aware that Mal Waldron had a musician-child. I stumbled across Mala's myspacemusic site awhile back. Interesting music. Reminds me of Tania Maria. (sp?) http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=40945333
