  1. Lazybones Georgia Dear Old Aunt Harriet
  2. Don't know about the distribution between the two. All the obits I've read say that Jones joined Motown in '64 as a backup for Benjamin, & seemed to become more involved as Benjamin's "personal problems" got worse and his health declined. Bennie Benjamin died in 1969, so it figures that Uriel Jones probably was the primary Motown drummer by the late 60's. Reuters obit: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090325/music_nm/us_motown Someone who has access to a Motown discography - assuming that such a thing exists - could give a more clear cut answer than I can.
  3. Man O' War George W. Bush Bill Kristol
  4. What I hear on that cut is that the rhythm section sounds very much in the background, more so than on the other tracks. I wondered if this might have been the first track that was recorded on the session, and Rudy Van Gelder hadn't gotten the levels he wanted yet. Don't have access to that info, so I don't know. I have a copy of the King issue of the Mobley/Byrd/Morgan LP. Sound is fine. Music not close to the music on Hank, at least imo.
  5. Something sounded wrong about that track. Didn't know that's what is was. Phasing = out of phase?
  6. Resurrecting this because I listened to Hank Mobley's Hank album twice in the past week I hate to be repetitious, but Wilbur Ware is amazing on this date. I can't think of another bassist who can grab my attention by just accompanying. The first time I (re)listened to Hank, I just listened to Wilbur Ware - his playing was that unique and that exceptional. Today, I listened and made sure I listened to everyone else on the session. Some fine playing by all, but for me it's a Wilbur Ware session. There was a recent thread about the team of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe. Wilbur Ware and Philly Joe don't have to take second place to Chambers and Philly, imo.
  7. Hank Mobley Sextet: Hank (BN/EMI Toshiba Japan) Again! Very fine session - & Wilbur Ware is amazing.

  9. Should keep you occupied for a day or so. Rather for months, to be honest, but the prize was right, plus these are all labels that aren't regularly distributed here (lots of Justin Time in the sales bins, too - a friend of mine bought the Billy Bang disc from that concert done by Lazaro's radio station, with Frank Lowe! Glad he bought some of the good stuff, too, or else I'd have bought even more...) Sounds like an opportunity for some shared listening time.
  10. http://harlemstage.org/SEASON/index.php?id=1#sacrifice Thought this might be of interest - especially to those in the New York area.

  12. Hey - for me it was cooler to see you than to see the other two guys!
  13. Hank Mobley with Donald Byrd and Lee Morgan (BN/King Japan)
  14. Looks like listening to Sonny and Hawk with Chuck paid some rewards - a good thing. Yes! And the stuff with Don Cherry was also a revelation -- I didn't know that they had played together. Other than "The Bridge", this is all new to me. Looking forward to digging in! Our Man in Jazz w. Don Cherry was on of the first jazz records I bought. Took a couple of listens to hear what was going on, but it's remained a favorite since then. You've got a lot of great listening to look forward to. Enjoy!
