Yes, all right - that's why I said worth getting and not "great" or "highly recommended," especially at a decent price.

ubu, "O'Neal's Porch" is worth getting. Been some time here as well since I last heard the Tatum/Webster disc. I also quite like the one with Hampton, by the way.
  3. I know of the quote as such as well but was unaware that it was preceded by the dressing down of the lady.

That the group masterpieces disc with the messed up track listing? A good one, that, if that. Thank you for the list, Nate. Some I have, some I've heard of and some I don't know at all; will inquire later about those in the final category.

I'll give "The Bishop's Move" a spin tonight and post here - short-ish regarding whether and how much I like it. I want to spend more time with "Opening the Gates," but it's certainly good to know that there's more that's at least as good. Nate, with all you're getting to hear p[ease do add to your top-10 list - I would definitely want to see what you think makes it through the crop of what you hear, and so what if the list exceeds ten.
  6. Should be here within a week, will chime in then. I heard the first track at a listening post and was interested enough to invest in this. Had a smile when on that one track after the main solos, Lovano comes in trying to pick up on Brecker's closing run/phrase.
  7. Which I'd prefer in any case; more for less, good for me.

Might have mentioned this already but want to spread the word on the new release by Evan Parker/Paul Lytton/Alexander von Schlippenbach & Peter Brotzmann/William Parker/Hamid Drake double trio on Victo "The Bishop's Move" recorded live in 2003. A 73 minute long track is what it is. I picked this up very recently and could only listen to it once so far, sounded rather good - I might make that very good as I give it another spin or two.
  9. Way to go J.A.W.! Although tastes are what they are, I do believe that you'll dig both.

Seconding this recommendation. I saw Iyer and Mahanthappa as a duo, Raw Materials, at this summer's North Sea Jazz Festival an Mahanthappa smoked - lots of shaking my head in disbelief at his playing, accompanied by slightly audible "owwww"s and "poooof"s.
  11. I've been very satisfied thus far with the services (and prices) of Verge.

FYI - Sergey Kuryokhin's "Some Combinations of Fingers and Passion" is available (again) from Leo records. This was sold out and difficult to get for some years now.

D.D. - thanks, I'll ask them whether they would also ship abroad, to here, for me. By the way, what I remember of the reed trio, Sonore, performance sounded pretty much improvised - I'll spin it again soon to see whether that impression remains.

McLaughlin (D.D.) - And in case it might lead to a favorable updating of your opinion of him, I'd also recommend his work with Shakti and Remember Shakti, the live ones in particular. The live record with Shakti, early one, packs a lot of fire and intensity.

Oh, yes Davis S. Ware - I just saw his quartet (Cleaver, Shipp, Parker) at the North Sea Jazz Festival and his own playing, less so the overall music, was very impressive, big tone, good control/technique, and big ears. I'd definitely see him again.

This might not be much help, but - Amassed and Masses are both good and different enough, I feel; so you might want to pick up first the one on which the line-up gets you more curious. I like Live as well but that consists of two lengthy pieces played by the same line-up so at least for variety's sake I'd say go with either of the above first. The live disc does have wonderful segments of great interplay and since the pieces are quite long there are more more opportunities for development and exploration of repetition and certain mellow segments. I haven't heard the latest but am happy with these three - and would have difficulty choosing any over the other two; but not sure if I want to get more either.

I share your feeling about MOONDOC. A competent player, sort of free bopper, but with no particular skills and lot of "clichés" in his play. I think his greatest talent is to surround himself with very good to great musicians. I own two or three (must check how much) records of his but never really listen to it. Based on the only record of his I've heard, Live at Glenn Miller Cafe w/Parker and Drake, I would dispute the assertion about his competence on the horn without necessarily taking anything away from his music (I wasn't interested in the music either and traded that disc but that's a different matter). Again, though, all this is based on what I heard on that one record only. Agreed about his largest talent being working with fine musicians.
  18. FWIW, the one time I bought things, Nirav replied to each of my two mails within a few hours. I did receive the discs soon enough after sending the payment and all of them were in excellent condition. I'll certainly get more once I get my money together as I find the prices to be very reasonable, and for some hard to find stuff too.

I'd like to provide a classification scheme/typology for records.
  20. I don't know why, but I feel an affinity for the Dutch team and would like to seem them come through. If Figo keeps-up (!) his form, this should not prove to be a big problem. Of course, C. Ronaldo can always come up with a surprise run, but he doesn't look good at finishing off such runs with a goal.
  21. That'd be my recommendation, too, for Braxton on piano. If nothing else, you get to hear Chapin burn big time, and Douglas, iirc, does himself proud as well.
  22. RDK - As accessible and somewhat less out: "Six Monk's Compositions" David Holland's "Conference of the Birds" If you can get to hear the first disc of "Charlie Parker Project 1993" Earlier output as in the recently re-issued quartet and quintet dates on Hat in addition to the contemporaneous, but somwhat earlier, output on Arista Nate made mention of. These bands play his compositions, however, and as much as I like them, some of them do have sections that might be a bit too "out" or "unstructured" to the unacquainted. All that said, I think they're excellent - in particular the dates with Lewis. I would advise keeping away from his piano playing if you prefer to have a taste of his output that is accessible and somewhat less out.
  23. it was a foul, not a penatly. that was the mistake of the arbiter. you can blame Davids, but he is not the kind of player to fegh around like that. from the angle they showed in the UK there was no contact. You're right, there was no contact, ergo: no penalty. And the the ref was only about two meters away from the incident. Re-Czechs vs. Germany - Sure the German attackers had difficulty rolling in or heading balls on one-to-one or near empty nets, as the guy who missed the post bounce off from Ballack's shot, whereas Barros, receiving a good pass, got through two defenders and the goalie. In the end, it was a good match to watch, definitely exceeding my expectations.
  24. Thank you, Brownie.

Looks enticing. Could anyone fill me in on the guitarist? That might prove decisive for my go/no go on this.
