  1. For sentimental reasons I am more atached to the Handy, but I love the Waller too.
  2. Good idea my friend. I love my dad. I miss him, being about 1600 miles away almost all the time. I'm going to be seeing him (and the whole clan) in a few weeks, and I'm looking forward to it. I'm really proud of him. He had a mainly black church in innercity Philly when I was young, and he did a lot for the neighborhood and for the civil rights cause in general. I felt how people admired and had trust in him, even when I was six or seven. He was among the 45 from whom LBJ selected 15 for his "Whitehouse Fellowship" in 1966. And when the Peace Corps contacted him he took us off to Ethiopia, and then Swaziland, with the love of God and man in his heart and he did a lot. And then he settled into a small town ministership and did a lot to move that small town into a conception of a larger world, and for the elederly and less fortunate in the whole area. Again I felt the admiration and trust directed his way from so many. And in the midst of all this he managed to write four excellent biographies! It was hard then to be in his shadow; I felt for a long time that my name was actually "Comma Lon" because I always seemed to be introduced as "Rev. Armstrong's son COMMA Lon." I had to move far away to really be me and not first his son. But I learned not to hold that against HIM, and I love him dearly.
  3. The best picture of Helen Forrest I have ever seen!
  4. The one, the only. . . . Ms Horn
  5. Sue Foley
  6. Paula Morelenbaum
  7. Clora Bryant!
  8. MELBA!
  9. Joe's one of the smartest persons I've ever met, and a really nice person. I thought he was here occasionally, but GOM would know, and he should be here if he can. (He's busy, very busy.) I'll send him off an invitational email!
  10. Which Blue Note "sound"? The one that "Runnin' Wild" is a good example of? The one that "Genius of Modern Music Volume One" is a good example of? The one that "Plays Fats Waller" is a good example of? The one that "Roll Call" is a good example of? The one that "JuJu" is a good example of? The one that "Joyride" is a good example of? The one that "Understanding" is a good example of?
  11. Oh, and there is no clue yet when it will reopen! I'm certainly not someone with "inside" information, but almost anyone here would relay this much.
  12. They decided to close down the board, revamp it, and reopen it. This may or may not have been because of a number of complaints about the behavior on the board . . . .
  13. Well, both feet are still intact, and no new shoes to pinch and cramp them either. . . yet. But I do have this set now, thanks to the kind consideration of a board member who gave a great price to me to give this set a good home. And I'm going to provide it with climate control and maybe even keep dust off the top of the box! It's a very handsome set, and I've listened to a few discs and have to say I enjoy them more than I thought I would! The Miles collector in me is sighing a contented sigh and I think this is going to be a nice asset to have in my shelves. Would be interesting if they broke this up into small sets, of varying size perhaps for the different bands or the different concerts. I don't see this as likely happening, but if it did, it would get this music into more interested hands!
  14. I have never been able to hear that. I've only compared it so far to the original US cd release and the Ultimate release. I guess I should have qualified that in my first post on this thread. Though I have preferred JRVGs to TOCJs. . . I just like the JRVG/RVG sound.
  15. It IS a polarity flipper.
  16. I have this. I love a lot of the sessions on this box. But then I'm into about twenty some years of listening to Mingus, over the last fifteen or so quite heavily, and I have learned to like a lot more of his work than I did initially!
  17. Well, I've been busy. So far I've gotten a copy of Blues for Allah, and Dick's Picks One and Fourteen reasonably priced. More on the way!
  18. Kevin, I honestly think the Columbia sounds better than the JSP, especially on the acoustic (horn as opposed to microphone) recorded dates. The Columbia set sounds amazing!
  19. Yes, I have the Stryker. I like it. The Henry Kaiser/Leo Smith works are good as well. Though these takes the next, guitar-phase of 'lectric Miles as their cue, unlike the Roney. It's sort of like someone exploring an odd little offshoot, because even though fusion fired and flew with a bang, and the electric Miles material was a big catalyst, so little of what followed really sounded like this!
  20. Well DAMNIt, it's not in STEREO! B) (But then again, I wouldn't want to change the magic sound this has.)
  21. No, I haven't heard that one. I've heard a few of the Muses and his work with Tony Williams, but I haven't been too impressed til this one. I liked his work elsewhere but this I like a bit more.
  22. Okay, I'll freely admit it, I've been listening to a Wallace Roney cd and enjoying it somewhat. . . . This from 2000, No Room For Argument, is interesting. Sure he plays as if he were Miles. If you look closely at the liners, there is a quote from II Kings that would lead one to infer that he thinks of himself as taking the prophetic mantle from Miles as Elisha did from Elijah. And the music is definitely MILESIAN in a Nefertit-Filles de Kilamanjaro-Waterbabies-Bitches Brew sort of way (with a few Oberheim like organ-synth blasts thrown in to Get Up With It-ize a minute or two.) But with Mrs. Roney (Geri Allen) and Buster Williams and Lenny White and others it's not just throwaway music. It does represent a tiny little updating of the style of the material from its Milesian roots, perhaps. . . or perhaps not. I still find myself enjoying the texture and the playing, and even enjoying the fact that it IS so Milesian! So I'm divided about this. I clearly enjoy it. I also feel it's somewhat of a waste for someone to emulate so closely the work of another, and not really have much more than just imitation as a result! Anyone else hear this and have impressions?
  23. Catesta, I still struggle with those two as well. They're probably not overrated, but I don't get pleasure out of listening to them.
  24. Okay I watched the video, didn't bother to listen to it. . . . Could this be PARODY?
