  4. We got a little snow yesterday evening, and it’s cold this morning. Sneaking in a little listening before a PT appointment today for Lucinda. I was drawn to this 2 cd set this morning–I really like it, the recording and mastering has a really live feel (thank you Malcolm Addey) and the Orchestra is having a good time. Duke Ellington “Live at the Blue Note” Roulette 2 cd set, disc 1
  5. “Live at Birdland” ECM cd Lee Konitz, Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian Cool and a bit mesmerizing.
  6. Another great Arbors cd, "Bobby Gordon Plays Bing". . . . Peter Ecklund, Keith Ingham, Dan Barrett. . . wow, good stuff.
  7. Seventeen degrees! COLD. Well, at least the days will soon start being a tiny bit longer. I’m re-listening to this excellent recording . . . I didn’t get to finish it yesterday. McCorkle’s.voice was so rich and her interpretations . . real. . . you felt the songs. Susannah McCorkle “I’ll Take Romance” Concord cd.
  8. Susannah McCorkle “I’ll Take Romance” Concord cd. I’ll take romance as well. Frank Wess is really nice here. 225×222 16.2 KB
  9. I don't know. I don't have qualms about buying a boot now and then. In this case it was a gift.
  10. Two masters I love–Earl Hines and Muggsy Spanier! “Earl Hines / Muggsy Spanier All Stars – The Chicago Dates” Storyville cd. 300×299 6.95 KB Bass – Pops Foster Clarinet – Darnell Howard Drums – Earl Watkins Piano – Earl Hines Trombone – Jimmy Archey Trumpet, Cornet – Muggsy Spanier

  14. COLD morning again.. I slept well but woke up at 5 and that was IT. Finally opened this new Lateef release and it sure sounds great! Yusef Lateef “Golden Flower, Live in Sweden” Elemental Music 2 cd set, disc 1 800×800 113 KB For some reason it made me think of my first exposure to Lateef. Early on in my discovery of jazz I bought a Charlie Parker record on Charlie Parker Records that when I spun it was NOT Charlie Parker though that was what all the labeling said. It took me a while to discover it was a mis-labeled Yusef Lateef record!
  15. Bob Wilber and Bechet Legacy “Live At The Vineyard” Challenge cd Bob and Randy are a great pairing and I’m enjoying this drummer-less quartet. Bass – John Goldsby Guitar – Mike Peters Soprano Saxophone, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone – Bob Wilber Trumpet – Randy Sandke
  16. I think a lot depends on what years one "came up" into a musical listening life. I was 17 when I discovered Filles de Kilimanjaro, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Miles Davis at Fillmore, et al and had just returned from over five years living in Africa and my favorite music was Hendrix and Cream and African music I heard (Ethiopian, Swazi and South African). Electric Miles spoke to me in ways nothing else did, and then over the following years of the 'seventies I went back in time with Miles in my listneing, and followed Miles sidemen and artists Miles praised like Duke and Bird.
  17. Duke Ellington "Volume 4, 1928" Masters of Jazz Media 7 cd Fantastic music from before the Big Crash.
  18. For me it was almost all the electric albums before retirement, then the quintet with Wayne, Ron, Herbie and Tony, and THEN the Prestige material. But I love it all.
  19. 1Brother Jack McDuff, George Benson “The Legendary 1963–64 Concerts” Finger Poppin’ 2 cd set, disc 1
  20. Ruby Braff “I Hear Music” Arbors cd A great swinging date with a tight band. Bass – John Beal Tenor sax - Tommy Newsome Cornet – Ruby Braff Drums – Tony Denicola Guitar – Bucky Pizzarelli Piano – Bill Charlap Vocals – Daryl Sherman (one track) Recorded July 28, 2000.
  21. COLD. It’s going to be one of those winters (as I keep finding myself thinking and repeating to myself). Starting a day listeninig as Lucinda takes her first nap. . . a disc I haven’t heard long enough for it to be a joy to me after decades of listening to it. And in my favorite edition: a JVC XRCD in lp facsimile. There’s just a deeper soundstage to this mastering, and little details that reveal texture. . . I love the sound of this disc. Steamin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet LP facsimile XRCD
  22. Bob Dylan “New Morning” Mobile Fidelity Lab SACD Daaaaamn this sounds great.
  23. I watched the Fantastic Four "First Steps" on Blu-ray. I liked it a lot, took me back to being a pre-tween again in my brain.
