  1. Yes, I remember frequenting the "Vinyl Solution" in Grand Rapids. Those were the good old days before the scourge of political correctness strangled public discourse.
  2. I recently purchased the "Soundtrack from I Want to Live" @ 1959 United Artists label. The "A" side displays an audible haze of hiss and crossover distortion while the "B" side is relatively quiet. I took my 30X glass (used for examining process offset printing) to compare both sides of the record. I couldn't find any difference in surface/groove quality between the sides. Is the surface noise of side "A" coming from damage to the groove walls? Or does the problem stem from the original pressing process. I've had a similar problem with another United Artist release so I feel it probably is the latter.

I was visiting my mom in the Miami area this week. Last night we settled in to watch a biography of this man on the local PBS station. It didn't matter in the least that the film was entirely in Spanish; we both were mesmerized by the music this man played. Does anyone know where I can find some LPs recorded by him. I "Googled" him but was dissapointed to find there is very little biographical information (in English) on this man.
  4. I saw the Mulligan Big Band at the old Jazz Showcase location when it was under the disco off Rush St. in Chicago. They cooked that night.
  5. That is an impressive job of research. Thank you so much!
  6. I have his first two LPs on Columbia, "Introducing Pete Rugolo" and "Adventures in Rhythm". Although it's very difficult for an orchestra so large to swing, I still enjoy them for the complexity and richness of the arrangements. As is so typical of most Columbia jazz albums of that time no personnel is listed. Does anyone know who participated in these sessions? Thanks.
  7. On the Al Cohn album, "Mr. Music", there is a guitarist listed as Sir Osbert Haberdasher. Does anyone know the identity of this mystery plectrist?
  8. I have an audio tape of a WTTW "Soundstage" presentation that was broadcast live in 1981. It featured all the above artists plus the full Basie Big Band. The reason I mention this is this past weekend when I was in DC for Thanksgiving I toured the Museum of American History and saw a small exhibit devoted to Ella's career. The display was no big deal but did feature an exerpt from this broadcast. I was wondering if anyone knows of a DVD of this performance. I assume Norman Grantz's estate would own the rights to this memorable video document. It would be quite a find.
  9. Thanks to all very much. I'll keep my eyes peeled for an HHB or Tascam.
  10. Thanks so much for your informed replies. I'll start looking for these LPs ASAP.
  11. I first want to say I'm not being flippant about this question. I was sitting at a restaurant this evening and several Monk pieces were being played as background music. I suddenly got this thought as Charlie Rouse was soloing that Pee Wee Russell would have been a perfect foil for Monk's tangential style. Anyone out there with any comments?
  12. I've been considering the purchase of a "stand alone" CD recorder for the sole purpose of LP to CD transfer. To my understanding, HHB starts out as a Pioneer, getting higher quality technology added in England. How do decks of this type compare to the more popular brands? Would buying a quality deck like an HHB be fiscal overkill for just LP to CD transfer? Thanks.
  13. Thank you. Too bad she didn't do more.
  14. I recently purchased Shirley Scott's "Great Scott" LP. One of the pleasant surprises on this album was a blues tune featuring Shirley on vocals. As a long time fan of her instrumental prowess, I was taken by her plaintive, soothing voice on this tune. Does anyone know of other vocals done by Shirley?
