Tjazz Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 See the havoc that vinyl records can cause. -------------------- Man rescued after shelves, record albums collapse at Coral Springs warehouse -------------------- By LOU TOMAN & SHANNON O'BOYE sun-sentinel.com June 4, 2004, 12:05 PM EDT CORAL SPRINGS - A 57-year-old electrician was rushed to a nearby hospital Friday morning after several thousand pounds of metal shelving stacked with old-fashioned vinyl record albums collapsed on him at a warehouse. The worker, George Johnson, of Tamarac, was standing on a ladder while installing lights in a Dot Marketing warehouse on the 3600 block Northwest 124th Avenue at 10:14 a.m. when the accident occurred. Several of the nearby 7-foot high shelves fell over for some reason, triggering a virtual landslide of metal shelving and the packaged vinyl record albums. Johnson was soon completely covered by thousands of pounds of debris. People outside the warehouse heard the collapse and Johnson's anquished screams for help. They rushed in to help and called 911. It took rescuers and emergency workers 20 minutes to unbury Johnson. Fire-Rescue spokesman Mike Moser said Johnson's life was probably saved because he fell first, then the ladder, then the boxes. The way the ladder landed, it created a cave-like void in which he lay protected from the crushing weight. Johnson was conscious when he was placed aboard a helicopter for a fast flight to nearby North Broward Medical Center. A condition report was not immediately available, but his injuries were reported to be non-life threatening. Copyright © 2004, South Florida Sun-Sentinel Visit Sun-Sentinel.com Quote
JSngry Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 Well, at least the havoc was real, not digital... Quote
wolff Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 I've often thought about securing my 6 1/2 foot shelves to the wall, but have not gotten around to it. Probably, SOP in Japan and LA. Quote
Leeway Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 This actually happened to me once. I was at a bookdealers storehouse. The books were shelved on metal industrial type shelving. I pulled a book out from the shelf- mind you, nothing out of the ordinary, when a whole series of the shelves collapsed domino fashion. It was scary for a moment . I ended up pressed under some books but I was able to extricate myself without too much harm, to my body at least- I was freaked out, as was, of course, the bookdealer. Rather surprisingly, he didn't shoot me. It does sound lame to say,"It wasn't my fault," even if it wasbn't, when standing hip deep in what was once a book colection. My removing the book from the shelf was the proverbial straw, or tipping point, that revealed the weakness of that type of shelving. I prefer wood! And attached or banked to the wall. Quote
sidewinder Posted June 6, 2004 Report Posted June 6, 2004 In order to avoid such incidents I swear by solid wood cubes, floor mounted on plinths and no stacking. I won't take any chances with that Maynard Mosaic LP set Quote
