mr jazz
I really like Arturo and consider him a major player these days. I just found out he will be at The Birchmere (good club but not known for jazz) in August and I will be there. I've been telling myself for years I have to catch this guy live sometime. I was listening to Hot House the other day-a killer album of latin big band jazz. I have his new cd-Trumpet Evolution- coming soon. Any posters share my enthusiasm for this artist? Big Wheel
The cat can play but the new CD sucks. A pity because I am personally acquainted with one or two of the people on it. Save your money.
Joe M
This (his new cd Trumpet Evolution) has to be the worst concept album of all time. This is what kids in high school try to do! Note for note recreations are not cool for veteran jazz "artists". Why not listen to the originals???
pryan
I agree completely with Joe. It just a concept that I don't get whatsoever. You'd think he would be trying out some new things, musically, but Arturo's basically transcribing (which isn't easy, I'll give him that much) and playing note for note stuff that's been on tape for decades. I can see a tribute album of some sort, but, again, this idea totally doesn't float my boat, one bit.
Rooster_Ties
My uncle has frequently played bits of Arturo Sandoval albums for me, and I alway have to fake some interest in them... Because I almost never find all that much that I'm interested in, or at least not in the cuts he's playing for me. Sure, he might be an incredible player in terms of his technical skills, but what he has to say just doesn't speak to me. Hopefully I'm not coming down too hard on him - I'm not saying he's all bad. Just that he's not really my kinda thang.
mr jazz
I still think he'a great player but I'm less than impressed with Trumpet Evolution especially as he rerecords material-Joy Spring, etc-which he's already covered. Still, how many current trumpet players would even attempt to perform so many different styles? Hot House remains my favorite release of his.
