jazzbo Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 Dear Folk, I've been listening to a cassette of a NPR broadcast of Mingus' "Epitaph" work conducted by Gunther Schuller and performed in June 1989 from Wolf Trap. The cassette has just about or just over HALF the performance. I would love to be able to hear the second half of the performance! It was a very good night! If anyone has this let's talk! lonjazz@yahoo.com Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 Maybe Sue Mingus can burn you a copy. She probably "owns" that too. Quote
RDK Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 I'll check with my "sources" Lon... Quote
bertrand Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 I was at that concert - fabulous (no tape, alas). Bertrand. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 That was filmed too, right? There was also a live broadcast from the Chicago Jazz Festival - 1990, I think. I caught Epitaph live in Damrosch Park, NYC on August 28, 1990. Mike Quote
jazzbo Posted September 10, 2004 Author Report Posted September 10, 2004 I'm sure it was a great show! There are parts on this recording I like better than the cd release counterpart, and probably the other way around as well. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 Jazzbo, If you don't have the cd set and you want it, shoot me a PM. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 11, 2004 Author Report Posted September 11, 2004 I pm'd you Phil. I DO have the Columbia cds, since their initial release. . . I really like this broadcast though and wish I had the whole thing. Quote

Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 (edited) Definitely not. Steve was recording with Rutgers University folks like James Spaulding (1976), Kenny Barron (1980), and Ted Dunbar (1980). Subsequent to those, he recorded with Mickey Bass, Fathead Newman, Bobby Watson, Mulgrew Miller, Donald Brown, Geoff Keezer, Lewis Nash, Tony Reedus, Ray Drummond, and he had also done 3 albums of his own - all of this before 1990. Those guys are high profile in my book. Mike Edited September 11, 2004 by Michael Fitzgerald Quote

I first heard him in the late '70's with the New Brunswick Jazz Collective and through the '80's with drummer Bill Elder. I was surprised to hear him on the Epitath gig. Know Bill? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 Yes - that name is ringing a bell. Can't quite place it now. Mike Quote
7/4 Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 Yes - that name is ringing a bell. Can't quite place it now. Mike Original drummer with the fusion band Stretch. Used to play Wed. nights at the Court Tavern (New Brunswick) in the '80's. He then went on to play a straight ahead gig at Pizza Pinos (now a Chinese restaurant). I don't know what he's up to now, It's been about 10 years since I've talked to him. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 Right - Stretch. I saw them a couple of times and somewhere around here I have that bluish colored album. Mike Quote
Jim R Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 (edited) Lon, I have a VHS that I taped off TV (can't remember if it was PBS or Bravo or...) called MINGUS' EPITAPH. Don't recall any specifics (location, etc), as I haven't watched it in ages. I think it's over 2 hours long, but I can't remember for sure. I know I have it, but it may take me a little time to locate it. edit: I do remember now that Gunther Schuller was conducting, so it must be the same one... Edited September 12, 2004 by Jim R Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Well, pretty sure that Gunther Schuller conducted *all* performances of Epitaph..... Mike Quote
Jim R Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Ah, yes, that's right. I think I know where I put the tape, so I'll see if I can't take a look at it before the kids decide to use the VCR. I'll report back... Quote
Jim R Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 Well, what I have is the world premiere performance. Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center. The (british) narrator makes a reference to a June 3, 1989 NY Times article praising this performance. Intro by Sue Mingus. I wrote on the tape "2 1/2 hrs". I guess this isn't precisely what you were after, Lon. Anyway, I'll e you. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 12, 2004 Author Report Posted September 12, 2004 Thanks Jim, I've emailed you back. I'd love to see this tape, thanks! Quote
