Nickel story

I do not like the front. The reverse is ok. I’ve got one of the 2004 nickels where only the back is different and that’s ok. The worst is that they say the front of the nickel isn’t ever going back.

This is a problem when people have to justify their existence at the Mint. I hate all the new dollar designs. The quarter competition was pretty hokey, though there have been a few nice designs (NY, MI, IL, NH, NJ, VA), though some have really been awful (MD, AK, IN is the worst so far). Yeah, the states got to pick their own designs, but still the whole program was designed to show that the Mint still mattered. And why all this tampering with coins and bills since 1995? I don’t think there were any changes at all since the Kennedy half dollar through about 1995 (well, 1976) and now every year they come up with another coin promotion.

I'm with you on the front. Ugh. I guess the thing that surprises me is that it took them so long to hide Jefferson's ponytail.

Oh well, Washington is still a hippie on the front of the quarter. (Wigs count. ;) )

Well, I'm all for it. It's a nostalgia thing, I know, but I remember my youth when you could find three different kinds of dimes, two kinds of nickels, a couple of different quarters, three kinds of half dollars, etc. in your change. I miss it. Coinage in this country had gotten ridiculously conservative (in the real meaning of the word, not the political thread version! ;) ) and I welcome the uh...change.

I don't understan why nobody's thought to put an airplane on the back of the nickel.

Seriously, it's about time they brought back the buffalo; too bad it's not for good. Or at least, a long time rather than a measly half-year. All hail the mighty buffalo!!!

ejp, the paper money is a different story; they've been changing the bills to deter counterfeiting. I kind of like the new colors. As for the quarters, one of the worst designs has to be Vermont. Guys! I know you're proud of your maple syrup, but winter tree trunks do not a good coin-design make.

Whew...that was a kind joke, Jim; I felt the breeze over my head, but it was kind enough to come back and give me a second chance at figuring it out...

Not unlike Paul Bley playing a standard. ;)

I know why they do it. I just don't like what they came up with. Actually, my favorite currency is the Canadian Twoonie.

Well, I am glad to see "change" as well. Plus, a big reason they are doing this is money. The Mint has made a mint(Sorry, last bad pun...in this post) selling proof quarter sets...My Mom got a few of them a year or so ago, and she hadn't bought any proof sets in decades. Hell, until the nickel getting a new back design, the nickel had been exactly the same since 1939! The Dime has been unchanged since 1946(Well, they were silver til 1964) Penny has had Lincoln on front since 1909, back has been the same since 1959...change will hopefully create new fans of coins....

Unless, of course, some governmental nitwit [ahem] decides to replace any of the current president's faces with Ronnie Ray-gun.

THEN I'd have a fit.

The three dollar bill might be a good fit, though.

Just a thought...

Personally, I'd like to remove all the people from our coinage and currency and go back to the days of Liberty and Columbia and such. And that cool buffalo on the $5 or wherever it was. I don't know, putting dead presidents on our money just seems so unAmerican, like we're deifying them or something.

The buffalo was on the Indian head nickel.

Besides, Jazzmoose...dead presidents is all we got.

Well...dead or dumb.

I think Bubba was on the 3 dollar bill a few years back....
