LAST NIGHT I SAW THE BEASTIE BOYS AND I SWEAR HE SAID 'JUST PLUG ME IN LIKE I WAS **BARRY** HARRIS' (INSETAD OF EDDIE AS IN THE SONG) AND IT GOT ME 'A WONDERIN, HAS THE SIDEWINDER BEEN SAMPLED BY ANYONE? I MEAN ITS AN OBVIOUS CHOICE, OBSCURE, BUT STILL A HIT.

Don't think so. I think it may be considered too obvious, too sacred.

One issue that is not often covered in sampling discussions--many of the records that get sampled are not exactly considered sacred in the jazz world. Lots of electric keys/synth/Bobbi Humprey/Bob James/CTI/disco type records or extremely obscure records. Only a corny DJ would sample obvious, big selling records.

Look at all the fuss over the Beasties sampling James Newton. James who?

From www.the-breaks.com:

Morgan, Lee

Sidewinder: (Blue Note 1963)

* "The Sidewinder"

UMC's "Kraftworks"

The Sixth Sense: (Blue Note 1969)

* "Anti-Climax"

Onyx's "B--hasn---z"

Live at the Lighthouse: (Blue Note 1970)

* "Absolutions"

A Tribe Called Quest's "Oh My God"

Those rap groups had cool production, I bet they used the samples in context with several other samples--such that it wasn't a total rip off job. In fact, I know Tribe did--"Oh My God" is on one of the best-produced rap albums ever.
