Stefan Wood Posted October 21, 2004 Report Posted October 21, 2004 Just got an email stating that they will be in the mail tomorrow. Drool! Quote
pryan Posted October 22, 2004 Report Posted October 22, 2004 Excellent! That's some good news to start the morning with. That Dex set is going to be sweet. Quote
wesbed Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 In celebration of the rebirth of the O. And, in recognition of the recommendation made by xricci, tonight, I placed my order for the Dexter Gordon Mosaic Select. Dex always makes me think of good steak and Scotch. B-) Quote
pryan Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Wesbed you made a wise decision by ordering that set. I received mine yesterday and have been diggin' the shit out of it. This ensemble was very tight, and that tightness is reflected in the quality of these performances. Relaxed, sure, but also incredibly intense at the same time. Nice liner notes, as well. It's good to have multiple views of an artist. Another Mosaic winner! Quote
vibes Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Can anyone comment on the music and sound quality of the Dexter Gordon set? I've really enjoyed the recent RVG Dex releases, but am totally unfamiliar with his music beyond the mid-60's. Any comments would be appreciated. Quote
pryan Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Music = excellent Sound quality = competent GET IT, you will not regret it. Quote
wesbed Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 The Dexter Gordon Select is the kind of set that sneaks up on the listener. When I played the first disk from the Dexter Gordon Select I was thinking, "Hey, new Dex!" I had the music playing in the background while I played on my computer in the foreground. About a half hour into the disk I caught myself drifting away from my computer and toward the music. I had the thought, "Damn, this is really, really good." I've read certain opinions saying the sound quality of this set is not as good as one might expect (due to it being a live recording). I have no complaints about the sound quality. Maybe I've listened to too many 1950s/1960s jazz recordings and my ear has become accustomed to the 'old' sound? The Dexter Keystone Mosaic recordings sound very acceptable to me. Quote
pryan Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 The music is what you buy the set for, but the sound quality does not detract from the overall quality of the box. The music is on a very high plateau; this quartet was tight. Quote
