catesta Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 Kind of a dicked up deal. I disagreed with hiring the dude in the first place. Not because of his personal problems, but for the fact they the pulled the guy from A ball. Oy of the three finalists for consideration, I thought Melvin was the best choice. Quote
Quincy Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 The rule of hiring & firing is that a team that loses with an easy going manager next picks a hardass (and vice versa.) The hardass manager lasts 4 days, and now they're back to the easy going manager. Quote
BERIGAN Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 I didn't even hear that he was hired! I am sure the Diamondbacks didn't rush or anything, it just makes sense to hire another 100 game loser to be your manager! Karl Rowe was behind it, no doubt! Quote
PHILLYQ Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 In the NY newspapers, there were rumors that the Mets, who interviewed Backman, had concerns about his 'off-the-field' life. That raised a red flag to me(I thought drinking), but did not with D-Backs management, who did no background check. Quote
