Guest akanalog Posted November 17, 2004 Report Posted November 17, 2004 not sure if people consider embryo jazz at all but mal waldron and charles mariano did play with them so... i really like "father, son and holy ghost" and kind of like "rocksession" and "steig aus"-the two waldron sessions. actually an earlier "for eva" album with waldron was also just released i think. i just saw ther first two albums "embryo rache" and "opal" in a store. never seen them around before. are they worth checking out? what about later stuff-which is the mariano stuff. Guy Berger Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 Not familiar with the band, but this website reviews their albums. Guy Quote
Guy Berger Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Dip, Since I am guessing that by now you have thoroughly explored the Embryo catalogue, do you think I would enjoy their music? If so, which album should I start with? Guy Quote
samnat Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 I have all the albums up to 1977 and a live one from 2000. IMO Steig Aus is absolutely fabulous and their best from that era. We Keep On is excellent and has the most Mariano. The live album showcases some less interesting and meandering ethnic music. If you like Embryo you should check out Xhol or Xhol Caravan for extended jazz rock jamming. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 I like Embryo's Reise also; it's later, but strong in the "Ethnic jamming" category. The new one that puts Embryo and NNCK in the same studio is good, too. I had some weird private thing that was housed in a cardboard box - think it was late '70s - that was pretty interesting, too. It's not mentioned on the "review" site. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 I have a copy of For Eva and that first, proto-Embryo "Japo" album. I enjoy both, but For Eva is far more "jazz oriented" (there's a striking resemblance to Walt Dickerson in spots) than the later recordings with the full-fledged Embryo group. Quote
