Brandon Burke Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 Does anyone know where I could find out exactly which Savoy sessions were produced (and by this I mean organized or selected) by Bill Dixon? Thanks, Brandon Quote
JohnS Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 No but, the jacket of the Archie Shepp/Bill Dixon Quartet says that the album was co produced by Shepp and Dixon. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Robert Pozar, Marc Levin, Ed Curran and Marzette Watts dates were Dixon productions. Joseph Scianni took part in the "October Revolution in Jazz" but do not know if his Savoy date was a result of that Dixon connection (no mention of Dixon in the liners). I don't know about others. Michael Fitzgerald Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 And all four Savoy sessions are detailed in chapter 12 of Dixonia (pp. 333-374), titled, oddly enough "Producer". Mike Quote
Late Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Would be great to have a "tree" started for that first Dixon/Shepp Savoy session, as it seems that we won't be seeing it on compact disc ... ever? Anyone have it dubbed to CD-R? PM me, and I'll pay for cost and shipping! Quote

So I shoud assume then that Tom Wilson's "supervision" credit on The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra means that he served as producer and not Dixon? I guess I was always under the impression that the Ra date was one of Dixon's but it's looking like he (Dixon) wasn't making decisions like that until about 1963, two years after The Futuristic Sounds. Thanks guys, Brandon Quote
Brandon Burke Posted November 27, 2004 Author Report Posted November 27, 2004 Thumbing through the Szwed book just now I answered my own question. Quote
