How did this effort for Epic come about? A quick break from BN? Every time I spin this one, I wonder.

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (with Horace Silver) recorded for Columbia at the time, including the classic 'The Jazz Messengers'. Silver led the 'Silver's Blue' sessions at around the same time for Epic, a Columbia label.

Then Silver signed with Blue Note and went on to record all his great albums.

MartyJazz listed this as July 3 (the date I have, too)...

Not many U.S. sessions today... you guys got the day off or something? :P

July 4 seems to be the correct date for that Newport Monk/Russell encounter. Concert was held in late afternoon. The Lord says July 4 too.

I have also seen that July 3 date but this does not look accurate!

Two more specialized sources confirm the July 4, 1963 date. Robert Hilbert's discography of Pee Wee Russell shows July 4, 1963 as does Burt Goldblatt's "Newport Jazz History" which further indicates that the Monk/Russell set occurred Thursday evening, July 4, 1953, at Freebody Park.

This Monk discrepancy seems to be down to some (unfortunately typical) sloppiness on Columbia's part...

On the 1994 CD reissue of 'Miles & Monk at Newport' (C2K 53385) the booklet credits both Miles and Monk's sets to July 3rd, 1963 (Davis' set was of course from 1958)... then to compound the error, adds a note:

"Contrary to accepted knowledge, the actual date of this concert was July 3, 1958, not July 4, 1958."

... referring to the Davis set (not Monk's). Just to confuse things even more the 2002 issue 'Monk at Newport 1963 & 1965' (C2K 63905) continues to list July 3 (although giving the correct year)!

Seems some wires got crossed and stayed that way. I'm persuaded by the July 4 date. Thanks guys! :tup
