Starting about photo 1100 there's a bunch of Billy Eckstine's band from '44 (with Bird and Dizzy) as well as photos of Mary-Lou Williams. Apparently there are also photos of Duke and Billy Strayhorn but I haven't come across them yet. Some of you guys could probably help the archive identify musicians. Just check the "comments" box.

This is would be a wonderful site even without the jazz connection. If you're from Pittsburg this should make you proud.

Teenie Harris was a great photographer. Some of his best is right up there with Weegee. It's good that there's a web site for him, but the small digital renderings there don't even hint at how beautiful his pictures are.

I highly recommend the published book of his photos for anyone interested in this kind of photography.

Simply amazing! What a treasure trove!

On that 1100 series, there's also images of Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson, the full Count Basie band with Jimmy Rushing and Don Byas, Nat King Cole, Erroll Garner, Ray Charles with the Raelets and many more.

There's also the 1944 Earl Hines band with Billy Eckstine and Budd Johnson (1457) but no Bird...

Many thanks for posting this, Medjuck!

Took a quick look at the site.

Among the gems I noticed:

Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan with what looks like the first Eckstine big band with Lucky Thompson, Howard McGhee, George Duvivier or Tommy Potter(?), among others

Count Basie and Stan Getz:

Art Blakey and Horace Silver (Hank Mobley behind Silver) holding copies of their just released BN albums at a radio show:

Rahsaan in an early appearance:

Oliver Nelson! But what's he holding?

There are plenty of great images of the Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie bands, etc.

Oliver Nelson is holding a "Russian bassoon" which is NOT a bassoon (nor is it Russian), it's actually a kind of bass horn. It's a relative of the musical instrument known as the serpent.

That's WHAT. Don't ask me WHY.
