Soul Stream, how bout an obscure 25 every greaze fan needs to hunt down?

In the Legends Of Acid Jazz series, I have Sonny Stitt, Charles Kynard, Leon Spencer, Johnny Hammond Smith, Gene Ammons, Don Patterson, Melvin Sparks, Boogaloo Joe Jones, Houston Person, Booker Ervin, Trudy Pitts, Shirley Scott...I went nuts on emusic when I realized they were all there for the taking, I may have more of them that I can't think of. They all have their moments of sublimely greaaaazzzeey funk, particularly the Stitt and the Johnny Hammond Smith.

I've got a Jimmy McGriff Blue Note best of, and an import of his stuff on Groove Merchant that have some gems. Recently I added two live recordings of McGriff with Richard Groove Holmes, both pretty cool.

not a fan of the greeze and not a fan of the legend of acid jazz series since they are embarassing to pull out, but i really like the leon spencer one. his basslines are awesome.

and i guess they are a little late to be true greeze, but ronie fosters "on the avenue" and "cheshire cat" are two of my favorite records.

same with brother jack's "moon rappin"-that is one of my favorite albums. probably in my top ten of all time.

lonnie smith's "think" is pretty good too-i feel like it brings in a new element with the latin percussion as well as top flight soloists in lee morgan and fathead.

and jimmy smith's "at the organ volume 2", while i guess not greeze for the most part, is my favorite organ album ever. his duet with blakey on "the duel" is so far ahead of it's time...

i do not like volume 1 too much, or any other smith for that matter.

and not greeze at all, but i just listened to this live album by a german band trikolon from 1970 (it is called "cluster") and the band is an organ trio and the organist smokes. they do a sort of version of "blue rondo a la turk" or whatever that is hot. they also turn a bach fugue into a powerful and groovy 20 minute organ jam.

4. Leo Wright "Soul Talk" (w/Gloria Coleman and Kenny Burrell)

5. Willis Jackson "Star Bag" (w/ Trudy Pitts on organ, killer)

oh yeah. got to give respect to "two headed freap".

i guess i do like some greeze...

i just don't like the overtly bluesy-based stuff like "back at the chicken shack" though i have a lot of respect for it.

not a fan of the legend of acid jazz series

The cover art for the series is without question hideous, but is in stark contrast to the high quality of the music.

I've also got the Willis Jackson, iirc.

This series is far, far, far from "hideous" imho. Yes, like Noj I agree that the cover art isn't all that great. (But, I love this series so much, I've actually grown to enjoy the bad artwork too!)

Anyway, any series that starts off with Don Patterson's "The Exciting Organ Of" is awesome. This series has the only CD available versions of some of the best organ (most very, very, very hard to find before this) sessions ever cut.

I don't know if I even would recognize the orgiginal LP covers of many of these. I just think 'Shirley Scott Legends of Acid Jazz Vol 1. "The Red Cover"'.

I LOVE this series because the music contained within is some of my favorite music in the world.)

I'm going to admit something that may get me banished.

I have been confusing THE LEGENDS OF ACID JAZZ series with the TALKN' VERVE: THE ROOTS OF ACID JAZZ! Both have hideous artwork by the way.

Now, that I realize the gist of this series, I've got to get my hands on some.

While checking on this, I noticed on the website of the label whose name must not be spoken, that they have made some out of print dates available for download. Not a bad idea and other labels could / should do the same. Included are titles by Baby Face, Shirley Scott, Stanley T, and man others. Any of these "must haves?"

I just looked a little deeper and now I see they have made these titles available on itunes.com. This is not as enticing to me as having them available for download right there at their site.

George Freeman "Birth Sign" Delmark (Don't know who Robert Pierce is, but he kills the organ on one cut only)

"Bobby" Pierce made a side for Cobblestone called Introducing Bobby Pierce that was pretty nice. I forget who was on it, though,
