ghost of miles Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Mention of this in another thread led me to think that I should start a recommendation thread on its behalf. Besides board member Larry Kart's very valuable essay "The Avant-Garde 1949-1967" and Chris Albertson's piece on Bessie Smith (my apologies to any board members, known or otherwise, that I'm leaving out), it contains articles on nearly every jazz topic imaginable, most of them well-written and enjoyable (IMO) whether you're a neophyte, casual listener, or heavy-duty student of the music. When people ask me for a general book about jazz, this is one of the titles I usually suggest. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 (edited) and it hits the scales at "a hair" under 4 pounds. That is just over $12 a pound. I know 'cause I have one. Very fine "tome". Edited January 11, 2005 by Chuck Nessa Quote
Leeway Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 I have the book, bought it when a local store was closing, 35% off. Afterwards, I saw it being remaindered for about half price, but checking again recently, I'm not seeing any deep discounts on it. A really good lineup of writers-- dare we call them jazz "critics" ? The book should carry a warning: "Not for those who prefer their own 'primal' experience of jazz, unfettered by any social, cultural, historical or musical commentary, especially 'intellectual" efforts by so-called critics."
