Jazz Kat Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 What would you say are the best albums for piano players? Albums that like showcased the pianist the most? Quote
jazzbo Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 Duke Ellington, Piano in the Foreground. So good in so many ways. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 Almost any album collecting sides by Fats Waller and his Rhythm Quote

Jazz Kat Posted January 21, 2005 Author Report Posted January 21, 2005 What about the Blue Note albums. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 21, 2005 Author Report Posted January 21, 2005 I put the Red Garland album up there on my avatar. That's a damn good album! I love his stride chords! Especially If I Were A Bell. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 Yeah it's a good one. I like his live recordings a bit better; the three volumes of the Complete At the Prelude have some great Red. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 Sidney Bechet/Wild Bill Davison/Art Hodes, Running Wild Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 21, 2005 Author Report Posted January 21, 2005 McCoy Tyner, The Real McCoy has some great playing on the keys. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 21, 2005 Report Posted January 21, 2005 Looks like you already had "your" answers and don't need the rest of us. Quote
Jazz Kat Posted January 23, 2005 Author Report Posted January 23, 2005 Just like most of the things I post on here, I want everybody's opinion. Of course I got my own, but I want everyone else's. And this is a "discussion" board, where I wanted to, "discuss" the best albums for piano showcase. Looks like Jazzbo was running a one-man show. Quote
Jim R Posted January 23, 2005 Report Posted January 23, 2005 And this is a "discussion" board, where I wanted to, "discuss" the best albums for piano showcase. This type of thread idea (too broad, really) will not usually generate "discussion". It will generate a list. In this case, WAY too big a list to handle, IMO. If you had said from the start, for example, that you wanted suggestions for great piano performances on the Blue Note label, that might have been a way to generate a good discussion. If you want to "discuss", then the next step would be to ask Lon and Chuck more about the artists/titles that you're unfamiliar with. Or, you could choose to educate them about the titles you chose... Seriously, though, I would say that a narrower topic would work better. Even if there was universal agreement as to which albums best represented each pianist in jazz history, we'd be here until way after dark. B-) Quote
alankin Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 Quintessential Recording Session. Has this Earl Hines album made it to CD? Quote
