jazzbo Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Anyone have any experience, psychic impressions, guesses about the quality of these speakers for use as PC speakers in a small office? http://www.vonschweikert.com/fps_speaker.html They were mentioned in a thread about personal planar speakers and have me intrigued. I'm about to be moved into the first private office in my work history since 1983, and I may want to replace the speakers that I have with the PC with these if my IT department will allow me. . . . They look nice, and they look as if they would be a nice addition to my work listening time. . . . Quote
Guest Chaney Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 The "not really" part troubles me somewhat but the price is mighty attractive. 30 day refund offer, less shipping. I'd love to destroy the crappy JVC mini-stereo I've ben using in my office and get something even half-way decent. Hmmm... Color me intrigued. Quote
neveronfriday Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I've heard good things about them. There are better ones (which cost quite a bit more), but with the money-back guarantee, you can't really go wrong? Cheers! Quote
Guest Chaney Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 My office manager has been looking for someting along these lines. I copied the Von Schweikert copy and laid it on her desk. Maybe I can cajole her into being our guinea pig. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 9, 2005 Author Report Posted February 9, 2005 Nice move! There ARE much cheaper options. . .Maxell sells a three piece for less than 40 bucks! But no wood and brass and probably not the same planar panel design either. Quote
Guest Chaney Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 I thought I'd ask the Hoffman boys about this setup. "Von Schweikert" PC Flat Panel Speaker System Quote
Guest Chaney Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 (edited) From Audio Asylum: QUESTION: My computer speakers dont work anymore so I'm without audio on the PC... and I found these today. They look REALLY nice... little flat panel planar satellites and a little sub... really nice looking wood finishes and the price is nice too! Wondering if anyone has ever heard these before??? I'm used to the little cheapy boston ac. crap that came standard with my gateway way back when.... =D REPLY: Hi, I own a pair with the sub in acrylic. They sound great at low volumes but crack at even marginally loud levels. I was hoping to use them in a small bedroom system but they distort too easily. I would buy them for very near-field listening only, such as for computers. Pete Edited February 10, 2005 by Chaney Quote
jazzbo Posted February 10, 2005 Author Report Posted February 10, 2005 Yeah, I saw that a few days ago. I don't know how to evaluate things said at audioasylum. It's a strange place. . . . Quote
Guest Chaney Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 (edited) I know what you mean about AA. Here's some AMAZON comments. Edited February 10, 2005 by Chaney Quote

jazzbo Posted February 10, 2005 Author Report Posted February 10, 2005 (edited) YES, it was my politest statement. . . Saw those Amazon comments as well before starting this. I may spring for these, I'm still waffling! Edited February 10, 2005 by jazzbo Quote
Jim Dye Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Hey Lon! I'm getting my own office next week as well! I have a Tivoli Model One radio. It has an auxiliary mini jack input in the back so you can hook your computer or ipod or anything right up. I think it sounds great. It's mono, but in an office setting, I almost prefer it that way. Tivoli does make a two piece model two if you care to go the stereo route. The model two even supports a subwoofer! Worth a listen if you can find a dealer in your area. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 10, 2005 Author Report Posted February 10, 2005 Yeah, I've actually heard a Tivoli radio. It sounds good, but I'm sort of always tied to my PC, so having this three piece system would be great if it's an improvement over the one the state supplies (my former boss sort of got me the best she could and it's not bad, it's an Altec three piece from about seven years ago). If my IT department won't let me connect them to their PC I can always bring in one of my extra cd players and use that (I've got a Harmon Kardon and a nice Sony Walkman that I could use) to power those speakers. . . . Quote
jazzbo Posted February 10, 2005 Author Report Posted February 10, 2005 (edited) PS: Glad you're getting your own office; I'm finally being moved out of the old carpenter's shop under a parking garage I've been in for two years, a big room with three other people sitting at desks, and a large table where Grounds and Maintenance Technicians hang out when they can, and two adjoining private offices where my boss and the Grounds manager are housed. It's weird. Sometimes trucks go by overhead. The warehouse for building and ground maintenance is right next door and it has a parts bin carousel that goes round and round a few times a day and sounds like a train. And there are all sorts of interesting aromas like paint and starterfluid and. . . . I'm glad to be moving! VERY glad! Edited February 10, 2005 by jazzbo Quote
Jim Dye Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 Thanks! I'm shocked that they gave me my own space. I actually don't mind sharing an office. I like the other 2 guys I work with. I'll be losing a window and the company of my co-workers, but gaining the ability to jam out a bit. Plus I can put up my framed jazz pics. I lost my office at home when we had our second child. Quote
vibes Posted February 10, 2005 Report Posted February 10, 2005 If my IT department won't let me connect them to their PC I can always bring in one of my extra cd players and use that (I've got a Harmon Kardon and a nice Sony Walkman that I could use) to power those speakers. . . . Connecting speakers to a computer doesn't involve any software or hardware modifications, so why do you have to get permission? Seems kind of strange... Quote
jazzbo Posted February 10, 2005 Author Report Posted February 10, 2005 I just have to. When you work for the state and the taxpayers and when you work for people you don't trust to do the right thing, you have to cover certain bases. You have to ask even if you shouldn't have to ask. Quote
