Also check "Mother Tongue", also on that TUM Records label.

I have that, too :D

Aaltonen has been a favorite of mine since I heard him playing with Arild Andersen's quartet in the Seventies (there's also an ECM record of that group, that has never been out on CD, I guess).

A very impressive player.

As Kari S said, you should also get Mother Tongue (another Finn here?) .Superb playing. I have both of those cds and I've been playing them *several* times in the past 12 months.

I've also listened to several other Tum Records cds and while they sound great, those two mentioned above really stand out. Tum Records is a Finnish equivalent to HatHut/ECM---> they release some really high quality music but they are definitely not to everyone's taste.

If you are looking for Mother Tongue and you are living in the USA, you can order it at Downtown Music Gallery:

Just ordered this album, and a few other Finnish jazz albums.

Yes I saw that. I'm still awaiting the two TUM discs I ordered a couple of weeks back - one Aaltonen, one Haarla. Though I did secure a copy of the disc with Workman/Cyrille from deepest Gloucestershire.

Perhaps this thread could widen to Finnish jazz in general. I'm curious.
