Kari S
Juhani "Junnu" Aaltonen is a 70-year-old legendary Finnish free saxophonist. Also check "Mother Tongue", also on that TUM Records label. Here's a brief bio: http://www.fimic.fi/fimic/fimic.nsf/mainfr...22566C10046EA02
Eloe Omoe
Also check "Mother Tongue", also on that TUM Records label. I have that, too Aaltonen has been a favorite of mine since I heard him playing with Arild Andersen's quartet in the Seventies (there's also an ECM record of that group, that has never been out on CD, I guess). A very impressive player. Luca
JSngry
Got both of those, and they're very nice indeed. Very pensive, soulful music. Had no idea that he was 70, though!
Swinger
As Kari S said, you should also get Mother Tongue (another Finn here?) .Superb playing. I have both of those cds and I've been playing them *several* times in the past 12 months. I've also listened to several other Tum Records cds and while they sound great, those two mentioned above really stand out. Tum Records is a Finnish equivalent to HatHut/ECM---> they release some really high quality music but they are definitely not to everyone's taste. mjazzg
A new release on TUM imminent http://tumrecords.com/036-to-future-memories many of the usual suspects involved so i think we can be confident it'll be up to the usual high standards
A Lark Ascending
Yes I saw that. I'm still awaiting the two TUM discs I ordered a couple of weeks back - one Aaltonen, one Haarla. Though I did secure a copy of the disc with Workman/Cyrille from deepest Gloucestershire. Perhaps this thread could widen to Finnish jazz in general. I'm curious.
