"They called it a sax o' phone because in the old days - before Edison invented the telephone - people would carry a brass clarinet-type instrument around in a sack. When you needed to 'call' someone, you could play notes on the instrument and they could tell what you were saying by what notes you were playing. This was called 'phoning it in' and it was the precursor of the cellular phone. The saxophone was invented by Adolphe Sax, who used it to call his assistant, Peter Brotzmann."
