ejp626 Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 A couple of posts on the board have talked about this upcoming album, but I can't believe there isn't a post in the new releases section, unless I completely missed it. Anyway, a very good album -- often sonically dense but with a nice flow. I particularly like track 3, which was even a bit better live -- simply because they were really on when I saw them at the Green Mill. Vijay Iyer is paired again with Rudresh Mahanthappa. Bassist Stephan Crumb and drummer Marcus Gilmore round out the ensemble. I'll add more later, but this is a CD worth checking out. It's probably Iyer's best (so far) and he himself said that he and his band weren't quite ready to record some of the material (such as Cardio) until now, indicating that he felt they had really grown as a unit in the last year. Tracks 1. Revolutions 2. Inertia 3. Song for Midwood 4. Infogee's Cakewalk 5. The Big Almost 6. Cardio 7. Experience 8. Composites 9. Phalanx 10. Imagine (John Lennon) Quote
sal Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 (edited) On my short list. Edit: Just found it at my local Best Buy (!) for a decent price. Looking forward to giving it a spin in the next couple days. Edited June 7, 2005 by sal Quote
montg Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 I picked this up last week but have only been able to listen to it a couple of times. It may take some time for it to grow on me...there's kind of a static, stationary quality to the music that's not especially appealing to me....I guess I'm not hearing (or missing) something rhythmically. JSngry Posted June 7, 2005 Report Posted June 7, 2005 I'm liking this one. Iyer & Mahanthappa continue to carve out unique and compelling voices in today's jazz landscape. Quote
sal Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 I really like this one. In a sense it picks up where Blood Sutra left off, but more restrained and controlled. Great move switching drummers...the drummer from Blood Sutra was fantastic as well, but was a bit heavy handed, which served the music on that album well. But this album sounds more together, for lack of a better word. I need to listen to it more. Vijay Iyer proves that jazz is in good hands for the next generation. Quote
alankin Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 (edited) Excellent disc. ← I agree. ← So do I. Edited June 16, 2005 by alankin Quote
