Louis Armstrong Birthday Broadcast: Part One

24 Hours; Monday, July 4

Louis Armstrong is one of the most important performers of the twentieth century. ‘Pops,’ with his trumpet virtuosity, vocal stylings, and rhythmic mastery, is the progenitor of jazz. Armstrong codified the vocabulary of the jazz solo. He taught the world to swing; he taught the world to sing, and left his musical stamp forever embedded in the sound of both popular and art music.

WKCR-FM begins its celebration of the great man’s 105th birth anniversary on Sunday, July 3 from 2-7 pm, before bringing you 24 hours of nothing-but-Satchmo on Monday, July 4. Throughout the day, there will be segments of both specific investigation and relaxed meditation, spanning the entirety of Mr. Armstrong’s five-decade career. The perfect soundtrack to any Independence Day activity, WKCR is proud to present a full day of Louis’ musical legacy.

You may wonder: Why call it “Birthday Broadcast: Part One?” For all of his life, Louis Armstrong celebrated his birthday on July 4, believing he had come into the world on that date in 1900. It was only many years after his death (1971) that his birth certificate surfaced, proving that he was actually born on August 4, 1901! So, which ‘birthday’ should we recognize? The solution, of course, is to celebrate twice. Yes, that’s right - another full-day Louis Armstrong broadcast (“Part Two”) is in the works! Please tune in for this first broadcast on WKCR, at 89.9 FM in the New York Metro Area, or over the internet at www.wkcr.org all over the world.

I'll be playing some Armstrong today when I sit in for Joe on Just You and Me--music from an August 1945 Jubilee show with Ella Mae Morse and Frank Sinatra, music from the New Orleans soundtrack (thanks, Jazzbo!), "Summer Song" from The Real Ambassadors, and a few other items.

Happy "ceremonial" birthday, Satch!
