From 1996:

AMG give is 4.5 stars. I'd give it 4 (if I gave stars...), but no matter. You're gonna have to try real hard (and perhaps have an agenda/personal issues/whatever) to be a Rollins fan and not find this one pretty damn enjoyable.

1989 ain't recent (neither is 1996 for that matter...), but this recent AOW selection ain't too shabby either.

Of course, there's this 9/11 Concert thing that the new Milestone/Concord labe has slated for release, so who knows?

Agreement with JSngry: +3 is a damn fine album, as are Global Warming (1998) and This Is What I Do (2000)

Actually, there are many good things to be found in the Milestone albums- as we've discussed elsewhere- despite their low critical standing. A good investment is the 2 CD compilation Silver City, an excellent introduction to the later years.

I have to say though, I thought the Live in London disc was rather disappointing; takes ages to get anywhere and when it does it doesn't stay there very long. Maybe I need another listen to it.

That's precisely the quality that is appealing to me, how Sonny is very much feeling out the rhythm section, especially the drummer (who is more than happy to engage him in a discussion). It's totally non-"presentation" oriented, wholly an "in the moment" kind of thing, and if it's more about the process than the results to some ears (and I'm perfectly willing to admit that it may very well be exactly that), it's still the type of thing that you just don't get to hear much on record. Guess it depends on how much interest one has in the process itself as to how this type of thing will ultimately resonate.

But when the feeling out is done and Sonny snaps into "Four", WHOA!

The request was definitely for 'recent' recordings... I'll try and nab the +3 disc if I can find it. Yeah, I've passed on all the old Milestones. Maybe I shouldn'tve, but one can only find so much room for weird free records one isn't going to listen to more than once. Y'know?

Can't add much to those. Global Warming is a personal favorite.
