I found it impossible to play exactly like any of my musical heroes, no matter how hard I tried, and that helped finding my own style, though the influences are easily recognized.

But perhaps it's easier for me than for you - I'm German and my ideals are Afro-Cuban, a cultural gap that cannot be bridged completely. For someone from the same culture - probably a lot harder to achieve.

I think we all go through a period of imitation...then we shuffle the deck and be ourselves - for better or worse.

Maybe I just didn't get the question. I do try to imitate my fav. guitarists, drummers, etc.. sometimes, at least
