BeBop Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Picked up this one yesterday. Farrell - Tenor Chick Corea - Piano, Electric Piano Bob Magnusson - Bass Lawrence Marable - Drums January 29, 1979 Nice stuff. High energy, start to finish. Inspired, I'd say. And one of the best recordings of Speak Low I've heard. Chick sounds like Chick of this era, especially on electric piano (Bara-Bara). For my tastes, just about the right amount of electric piano for me - not much. This is also the last of the really good straight-ahead material I've heard from Farrell. (Haven't heard Vim 'n Vigor.) Marable good as always. Can't comment on sound quality; I've only heard on junky car system and PC. Picked this and several others up at Half-Price Books for $4.98 each. A good 'un indeed. Quote
BeBop Posted July 17, 2005 Author Report Posted July 17, 2005 Not sure how I missed it before. But there's more electric piano that I'd recalled. Still, doesn't spoil the album for me. Just makes it more of a period-piece. Quote
Jim Dye Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 I love this record! Did you get it on CD? I've only seen and heard the vinyl. Quote
JSngry Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Half-Price be havin' some Xanaduseedees.... Quote
GA Russell Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 I too enjoy this CD. I found it cheap at Borders in '99, and still listen to it once every couple of months. Quote
BFrank Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Definitely a surprise album for me, too. I downloaded it a year or two ago from eMusic. Very solid! Quote
BeBop Posted July 17, 2005 Author Report Posted July 17, 2005 I love this record! Did you get it on CD? I've only seen and heard the vinyl. ← CD. (XCD 1227) Just one of several nice looking items in the Half Price bins. Heading back today for Dolo Coker's California Hard. Quote
JSngry Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 If you're in the Dallas area, you can find more than those two Xanaduzies... Quote
BeBop Posted July 17, 2005 Author Report Posted July 17, 2005 Same is true here in DSM. They've got a dozen or more titles. The two I've named are just the ones that I want, but don't already have. Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, Barry Harris (several), Dex/Al Cohn/SamNoto/Blue Mitchell and others also in the racks. Quote
Spontooneous Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 The KC stores have had most of the titles mentioned also. But only one Barry Harris. Looks like these discs are getting better distribution as cutouts than they were getting at full price. Quote
marcello Posted July 17, 2005 Report Posted July 17, 2005 Check to see if they have the Sam Noto - Act One with Joe Romano on tenor. A great recording. Quote
