jazzbo Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Okay, I admit, I know NOTHING about Tania Maria's music. . . what little I remember hearing years ago didn't make me explore her work. However, on the very last track of the concert portion of the "Ed Motta Em DVD" . . . he accompanies Tania Maria with vocals (and sound effects) as she sings and plays electric piano. I've never heard anything else quite like it except maybe a few things by Airto vocally, and it is EXCELLENT percussive piano. I really really really dig it. . . it's a composition introduced as "Funky Tamborin." It's all just "scat"--rhythmic vocalizing along with the piano playing, and it's Brazilian in that way that Brazil has of beat and timing, and it's phenomenal. Okay. . .anyone. . . is this an anamoly, something strange, not like her regular work? Anything else like this at all out there by her? Quote
kh1958 Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 You might try some of her early Concord albums--one I like is The Real Tania Maria--Wild. I saw her at the Caravan of Dreams years ago, and enjoyed the concert, both her piano (accoustic) and accompanying vocals. I had the chance to see her at S.O.Bs in New York, six or seven years ago, and it was a different story--a very overamplified presentation that was not at all enjoyable. Since that bad experience, I haven't really listened to her. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 21, 2005 Author Report Posted July 21, 2005 Thanks, I ordered a cheap Concord two cd collection of two of her earlier albums and I'll check those out. . . . The video footage on this dvd from 2004 is really something! Quote
Rosco Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 I've had Come With Me (Concord) on LP for many years, although it's been an age since I've dug it out. As I recall, it veered from scintillating Brazillian jazz to more 'jazz-funk' (for want of a better term) tracks, with some nods to straight jazz (I believe there was a version of 'Embraceable You'). I'll try to locate it and give it another listen. I also recall liking some of her other Concord period things, then she signed to Manhattan and made some woeful MOR dreck. She seems to have vanished from the radar after that... Quote

marcoliv Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Come With Me was a hit here in Rio Marcus Quote
jazzbo Posted August 10, 2005 Author Report Posted August 10, 2005 I have so far purchased and absorbed "Piquante," "Taurus" and "Europe." I like them! I'm going for more! Quote
Cali Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 All I know is I've seen her in concert and she has her be-bop (chops) together! Quote
jazzbo Posted August 10, 2005 Author Report Posted August 10, 2005 I imagine she's great to see live. She's a great pianist! Quote
JSngry Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 She and Joanne Brackeen are two pianists whose playing sounds to me like they gotta go pee really badly but can't get away to do so. Just my opinion. Quote

Just my opinion. ← But seriously, she's got these moves at the piano like all the great old be-bop pianists. That kind of shoulder roll with the right shoulder when she's reaching for the high notes, if you know what I mean. Wicked! Quote
