ghost of miles Posted August 5, 2005 Report Posted August 5, 2005 This week on Night Lights we conclude our summer tour of the Decca Jazz Studio series with the fifth and sixth (and final) volumes. V. 5, led by pianist and arranger Ralph Burns, includes trumpeter Joe Newman and little-known alto saxophonist Dave Schildkraut, who was once mistaken for Charlie Parker by Charles Mingus during a blindfold test. Selections include Burns' originals "Cool Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Nocturne," as well as Alec Wilder's "I'll Be Around." V. 6 was led by French hornist/pianist and Jack Kerouac collaborator David Amram along with tenor saxophonist George Barrow; both were members of Charles Mingus' Jazz Workshop, and this date bears a highly modernist stamp. "Jazz Studio 5 & 6" airs Saturday, August 6 at 11 p.m. (9 p.m. California time, midnight New York City time) on WFIU. You can listen live, or wait until Monday afternoon, when the program will be posted to the Night Lights archives. Next week: "Alexandria the Great." Late 1950s/early 1960s recordings of jazz singer Lorez Alexandria. Quote

AllenLowe Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 inrteresting little piece of info about the Ralph Burns, and passed on to me by Bill Triglia - Bill told me that Dave Schildkraut, for some reason or another, was bugged about something the day of the sesion and deliberately played out of tune - which he does - Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 10, 2005 Author Report Posted August 10, 2005 Allen, I actually mention this story in the show and attribute you as a source--can't quite remember where it occurs in the program, but I gleaned the info from a previous post you had made here on the topic. Quote
AllenLowe Posted August 10, 2005 Report Posted August 10, 2005 it's funny, because I picked up the LP years ago and, though Dave plays well, his playing always seemed a little off - and I never made the connection until Triglia told me the story. I believe it, as Triglia, insane as he is, has always been a good and accurate source, recounting events and conversations that have invariably been confirmed by third parties. I never asked Dave about THIS, but, knowing him as I did, it does not surprise me. On the other hand, Burns clearly was non-plussed, as he named Davey as one of his favorite alto players in an Encyclopedia of Jazz poll - Quote
ghost of miles Posted October 19, 2007 Author Report Posted October 19, 2007 Rerunning this on WFIU this weekend, so it's already archived for online listening. WNIN will air the Portrait of Max show (also already archived) and Blue Lake Public Radio will air our autumn fund-drive program Sunday night at 10 p.m. EST--"Art Blakey: Class of '57," featuring the alto sax/trumpet front line of Jackie McLean and Bill Hardman. If you're a Blue Lake listener who enjoys tuning into the show, please pledge...they've been very supportive of the program. (Though by God it was tough last Sunday, following Lazaro's Muhal Richard Abrams show!) Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 Thanks, Ghost, for showing the original cover of the Amram-Barrow LP. I've had this LP for a LONG time as a 70s reissue on German MCA (but with a pretty dull "generic" cover of that reissue series) and had never seen a decent pic of the original cover before. Will give the disc a spin now.... Quote
