ghost of miles Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 Several years ago--about five, I think--there was a one-page article on Freddie Webster that appeared on the very back page of one of the three main jazz magazines (Downbeat, Jazz Times, and Jazziz). Does anyone happen to know the exact date of this issue, and where it appeared? I've done numerous Google & archive searches and have yet to locate it... at one time I had a Xerox of the piece, but my wife & I are in the midst of a move, and I can't seem to find it. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 16, 2005 Report Posted August 16, 2005 It sounds like a *very* likely topic for Nat Hentoff, who had the back page of Jazz Times around that time. However, in going through the issues, I don't see it and I don't see it on the Hentoff index page http://www.jazztimes.com/columns_and_featu...index.cfm?id=35 Down Beat was running Blindfold Tests on that page at that time. Jazziz is a *possibility* and my collection is sparse around that time. I'll keep poking around. Mike Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 17, 2005 Author Report Posted August 17, 2005 Much thanks, Mike--your tip yielded what I was looking for. It was "Freddie Webster: the Prettiest Trumpet You Ever Heard," in a Feb. 1998 issue of Jazziz, written by Harvey Pekar (pg. 79). Quote
BruceH Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Interesting that Pekar is still writing jazz articles at such a late date. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Why? It's what he loves. Mike Quote
BruceH Posted August 30, 2005 Report Posted August 30, 2005 Why? It's what he loves. Mike ← Admittedly I haven't been paying as much attention to Pekar for, oh, the last 10 years or more, but I understood he went through some grueling chemotherapy a while back, so I'm just glad to hear that he continued to write about jazz. More power to 'im. Quote

AllenLowe Posted August 31, 2005 Report Posted August 31, 2005 Harvey has gotten a bit isolated and even a bit stranger, I think, since he became famous - he was my pal for a while, calling me frequently, but since the film came out he just grunts when I call; so I don't call - Quote
Brad Posted September 1, 2005 Report Posted September 1, 2005 For those who may have missed it, GOM posted a link to this article at least a year ago and it's a worthwhile read: http://www.danmillerjazz.com/webster.html Quote
