Guest akanalog Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 so looking at the liners for wayne shorter's "atlantis" it is an anti-who's who... i heard the reason for this was that shorter was using philharmonic or symphony or whatever musicians versed in sight reading complex charts rather than using improvising jazz musicians. i mean maybe i just don't know 80s jazz musicians-but yaron gershovsky and michiko hill on piano??? but is this true about shorter choosing a different kind of sideman for this date? Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 Yaron Gershovsky is a good jazz player. He recorded and toured for quite a while with Manhattan Transfer. Mike Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 hmmm. ok then maybe i just don't know 80s jazzers because besides alex acuna i don't know any of the names on the album (except the one track with a different lineup because i do know ralph humphrey and michael hoenig and lenny castro. and on "joy ryder" i know just about all the names. bertrand Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 Jim Walker is apparently well-known as a flute player in classical circles. He played on one track on Miles' Siesta. Larry Klein is a rock bassist, once married to Joni Mitchell with whom he recorded in the early eighties. Don't know anything about Hill. Bertrand. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 Larry Klein was Mr. Joni Mitchell, well-known as a California bassist in the late 1970s and 1980s. Toured and recorded with Freddie Hubbard, for example. Jim Walker was member of Free Flight, the jazz/classical fusion group and is a top studio flute player. Joseph Vitarelli is a film composer. Michiko Hill is new to me, 2 previous recordings with Leslie Drayton. I'm guessing that Kathy Lucien is a relation to Jon Lucien and Nani Brunel is a relation to Bunny Brunel and Diane Acuna is a relation to Alex Acuna and Dee Dee Bellson is a relation to Louie Bellson. The others, I have no clue. Mike Quote
Guest akanalog Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 so all in all a weird group for shorter to restart his solo career with, no? Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 Well, I consider it a studio aggregation. I don't know that anyone paid the personnel much attention at the time. The personnel that was perhaps more significant was the band that he formed to tour with this material: Tom Canning, Gary Willis, Tom Brechtlein. These are all typical fusion guys. Ditto for Canning's replacement Mitchell Forman. On a few gigs, he added Kent Jordan playing flute. Mike Quote
JSngry Posted August 22, 2005 Report Posted August 22, 2005 AFAIC. Atlantis was/is all about the compositions, not the soloing and stuff. So it would make sense to hire folks who could play the parts the way Wayne wanted them played, with the practical consideration of learning the parts quickly, Quote
Kalo Posted August 23, 2005 Report Posted August 23, 2005 No arguments with any of the above, but I've always stayed away from this one because of the "new-agey" title. Am I wrong? Quote
