ghost of miles Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 Recently listened to the Sounds' LIVE AT THE LIGHTHOUSE, which is the only CD I have under their name besides BABE'S BLUES. I have BLUE HOUR w/Turrentine and a couple of other dates where they're backing somebody, but where to go next? I'd like to pick up two or three more titles--and is there a rumored Mosaic Select in the works, and what will that include? Quote
DrJ Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 Not sure what's going to be in the Mosaic Select, if it happens. Of the Three Sounds I have, I think the first couple BNs - INTRODUCING and especially BOTTOMS UP! - are the most consistently strong, but they are all strong (I have almost all the BNs). Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 GoM, Black Orchid was the other title that saw domestic reissue so it might be easier to track down. It's another solid date, like all of the sessions put out during their first run with BN. If you are willing to go the import route, the number one CD to find is Moods, in my opinion. If you want the much more funky side with only Harris left from the original band, you can try the "Live at the It Club" dates. As for the Mosaic Select, from the last conversations reported by Brad, it sounds as though Michael is considering two volumes, presumably in order to get out the entire output of the band from the '59-'62 period (or whatever the original run was). Thanks, Dan. I'm definitely willing to go the import route, so I'll look around for MOODS--and for BLACK ORCHID, if it's not extinct yet. The It date sounds promising too. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted July 6, 2003 Report Posted July 6, 2003 David, "Black Orchid" is available at Half.com and "Moods"might also be there for all I know. I'm also on the lookout for 3 Sounds stuff. I've got about six of their BN sessions right now. My favorite of the six? Probably "Black Orchid" and "Babe's Blues." "Live at the Lighthouse" is also good, coz I like Gene Harris on the organ. Quote
ghost of miles Posted July 6, 2003 Author Report Posted July 6, 2003 David, "Live at the Lighthouse" is also good, coz I like Gene Harris on the organ. Which was dubbed in, right? Interesting story about that in the liner notes. The Sounds seem to get pejorative references in some jazz discussions... but I really like their, well, sound. I'm really taken with the LIGHTHOUSE recording, for some reason, more so than I was with BABE'S BLUES, which I picked up at a greatly-discounted price a couple of years ago when a record shop closed. I've always enjoyed them as a backing band, but the live record has suddenly awakened my interest--and I knew that Organissimo was the place to advertise it, what with Mr. Gould & co. hanging around these parts. jlhoots Posted July 7, 2003 Report Posted July 7, 2003 All mentioned so far are well worth it. I also like Here We Come. Quote
