Free For All Posted September 7, 2005 Report Posted September 7, 2005 What's the word on these, Jim (....or anyone)? Quote
gslade Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Thanks for the Heads up for Sonny's Birthday I pulled the trigger on both Quote
sidewinder Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Recorded by Les Tompkins at Ronnie Scotts from his own personal collection of recordings. This '65 tour was a legendary one for Rollins. Quote
Clunky Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 any of the other Harkit discs recommended ? Quote
sidewinder Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 (edited) The Rendell/Carr for sure (not sure if it's still readily available though), recorded mainly in Camberley. Not heard any of the others yet, although Tubby Hayes Live Vol 2 is getting good reviews. Would like also to check out the Yusef Lateef. I was able to pick up a vinyl of their Spanish BBC transcriptions by Tubby Hayes quartet (released on CD on 'Commonwealth Blues' by another label) but they have pulled this one from the market. sidewinder Posted September 8, 2005 Report Posted September 8, 2005 Thinking about it, maybe they should change their name from 'Harkitt' to 'Yankitt' Quote
MartyJazz Posted September 10, 2005 Report Posted September 10, 2005 Vol.2 just arrived in today's mail. Digging it now. Nirvana! What's really nice is the presence of tunes I've never heard him play before, i.e., 'Nutty" (Monk), "A Foggy Day", "Flamingo". Quote
MartyJazz Posted September 11, 2005 Report Posted September 11, 2005 Just finished listening. The last cut, "Night and Day" - guaranteed to take your breath away. A fabulous 20 minute jaunt! When writers such as Francis Davis point to Sonny as the greatest improvisor (of all time), one can play this track to show exactly why that assertion is true. Quote

So much so, in fact, that one got a little tired of hearing it sometimes. Yes Gary, you wanted to say, we know Rollins is great, now could you just move on? Quote
