Guest akanalog Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 anyone have archie shepp & the full moon ensemble on actuel? what is the deal with the liner notes written by delfeil de ton? i imagine it is a joke? like shepp wrote them and is pretending they are translated from french and were written by an ignorant and arrogant french writer? i don't know what delfeil means. perhaps bullshit or something? this isn't a real person, right? though it would seem weird shepp insulting the french as the country seemed to embrace he and the movement he was a part of pretty well. i wasn't there. i don't know. but these liner notes are weird. clifford_thornton Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 I'll look when I get home - Shepp's liners are pretty distinctive, you know. They had some real idiots (like Claude Delcloo) writing those notes; though I've always liked Jean-Max Michel. Those records are terrible. Sorry. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted November 3, 2005 Report Posted November 3, 2005 what? you are saying the actuels are terrible? which ones? all? the shepps? Quote
brownie Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 anyone have archie shepp & the full moon ensemble on actuel? what is the deal with the liner notes written by delfeil de ton? i imagine it is a joke? ] Delfeil de Ton is a real person and a very serious and intelligent commentator/writer with his own sense of humor. The liner notes he wrote for the Shepp/Full Moon Ensemble should not be taken at face value. Delfeil de Ton has a column in the prestigious Le Nouvel Observateur weekly magazine. He delves into jazz pretty often. He was among the very active supporters of Shepp, Ayler, Sun Ra and other new players when these musicians came to France several decades ago. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 I'm sure a fair amount is lost in the translation to English, right? Quote

brownie Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 I'm sure a fair amount is lost in the translation to English, right? ← The Actuels albums with me have the liner notes in their original French. Guess whoever translated this faced serious problems getting inside the spirit of the text! Quote
Guest akanalog Posted November 11, 2005 Report Posted November 11, 2005 no the notes are just sarcastically ironic or something is all. Quote
