Guy Berger Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 I'm kind of surprised nobody's made a bigger deal out of this (or maybe they did and I did notice it; Brownie did note in the "recorded on this date" thread), but... 50 years ago (October 26th, to be precise), Miles Davis went into the studio with a quintet consisting of a cocktail pianist, a kid bassist, a drummer who played too loud, and a no-name tenor saxophonist who was only hired because Sonny Rollins was unavailable. They recorded: Little Melonae Budo Ah Leu Cha Two Bass Hit I wonder what the hell Miles was doing with these bozos??? Quote

GA Russell Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 I played the Prestige LP The New Miles Davis Quintet the other night, and saw that I had noted on it that it was recorded Nov. 16, 1955. I imagine that a year from now we will see European issues of the recordings mixing the Prestige and the Columbia sides. Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 14, 2005 Author Report Posted November 14, 2005 I played the Prestige LP The New Miles Davis Quintet the other night, and saw that I had noted on it that it was recorded Nov. 16, 1955. Though the Prestige session wasn't their first studio session, it was the first album by the group to be released (and, IIRC, the only one released during the group's lifetime). Unless someone was lucky enough to catch them in person, it was probably most listeners' first encounter of the group. Guy Quote
medjuck Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 Do you know when the quintet's records were released? I've been trying to put together a timeline about Miles influence based on the release date of his Lps but I've only been able to do an approximation of the release dates of the Prestiges. Quote
