JSngry Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 Young Master Charles is all hot & bothered about the new fiber-optic internet service from Verizon. Me, I'm kinda burnt out on the V-Lords, as their track record over the years has left me unimpressed, to put it mildly. However, what looks cool about this FIOS thing is that they wire the fiber-optic line all the way up into your house. Comcast, our current ISP, goes fiber up to the node, and then coax from there. I've got no complaints, generally, but you know how the young folk are.... Just wondering if anybody's yet taken the plunge on this new service, and if so, what the results have been. The hype is certainly enticing. As always, thanks in advance! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 28, 2005 Report Posted December 28, 2005 When I recently changed from dial-up, all my neighbors told me to avoid Verizon. They had all tried it and left 'cause of lousy service - basically a f*** you attitude. The locals all feel Verizon thinks of themselves as a "phone company" and don't really want to be bothered with "other stuff". YMMV. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 This Verizon FIOS screeeeeeeeeeeeeeams! They offered it to me to replace my DSL and at first I said no, because DSL was fast enough and the lowest-price FIOS plan was $20 more. Then, they offered a 5 Mbps down/2 Mbps up plan for $5 more than my DSL plan. Hey, $5 to eliminate the crappy audio on my landline telephones and increase my speed by 5X? Why not? Now if they'd only offer me FIOS-TV. I'd love to tell Comcrap to stick it. Kevin Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 Wasn't there a discussion here within the past year or so where someone swore up and down that Verizon was not going fiber to the premise? I'm in Bell South territory. With the recent ATT/Cingular/Bell South conglomeration, I can only imagine what services will be offered in the next five years, fiber to the premise included. Seems the cable providers are losing their advantage, though the Bells are spending a fortune to modernize, realizing that DSL was only temporarily a competitive option. 2Meg up is impressive, especially at a DSL price. I just ran a speakeasy test. My TW Cable connection is running approx 384kb up/5Meg down. Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 28, 2007 Report Posted January 28, 2007 p.s. content over the fiber will be there sooner than later. Quote
