sheldonm Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 Caught Tony's first very energetic show tonight and it was excellent. Don't recall the most of the tunes but played at least 2 of Jimmy Smith's and a Don Patterson tune. I had a chance to speak to Tony for a few minutes after the show and mentioned Organissimo. He said "I love those guys, tell them I said hi". I told him Joe G would be in the house tomorrow night and he said to tell him to stop by. Although I can't attend the show tomorrow night, I'll most likely stop in to chat with Joe G. The Jazz Kitchen crowd seems to love Tony and they lined up 25 deep to chat with him and buy cds. Here a a few images from the show. m~ Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 Looks like he playing the new Porta B. http://www.hammondorganco.com/prod_portable_newb3.htm Hey Joe, tell him to get Ham-Suz to give me one of those and save my back, will ya? Nice pics, Mark! Quote

Nice pics, Mark! Jim, you don't have $20,000 laying around to buy one? When are those guys going to make these things affordable to working musicians? Ain't that the point? I mean it is a Port-a-B ain'it...that means carting it around to 50 dollar gigs I would think. Let's see, just 400 gigs and it'll pay for itself! Anyway, would love to see Tony Monaco in person, but don't get too many major organists south of the Mason-Dixon. Ya'll have fun and don't let Tony steal Joe G. Quote

Nice pics, Mark! You're right Jim, Tony rented it from George Smith Music in Anderson, IN. If I remember right, this is where Joey D rented one the last time he played the Kitchen. Here is a better image of it. m~ Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 He had to rent it? I thought Ham-Suz had given him one? Damn... there goes my plan. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 I'm looking at getting one of these: http://www.hammondorganco.com/xksystem.htm I've played one at the local music store and they are very nice! They break down into three pieces and altogether only weigh 125lbs instead of 425lbs. Ham-Suz just offered me an endorsement deal so I can get it at dealer cost, but that's quite a bit of money. I need to figure out a way to come up with that scratch. I'm not joking about my back... I'm scheduled to have an MRI next week and have recently experienced weakness in my left leg and a lack of hot/cold sensation on the left side of my lower back. Not fun. Quote

Aren't those things ridiculously expensive too? Even the Hammond one keyboard thing with the one tube in it ain't cheap. Too bad about your back. I think all organists who spend a lot of time gigging have lifelong injuries from it of some sort or another. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 The XK3 is around $2100, the extension cabinet with the second manual is $2000 and the pedals are $1900, so yes, it's expensive, but not nearly as bad as a Porta-B! I guess when you think that a B3 cost about $2000 back in the 1950s, it's not so out of touch. Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted February 4, 2006 Report Posted February 4, 2006 My biggest concern about this system, and I'm going to have to go back to the store to play it, is the MIDI implementation that connects all the devices. MIDI has inherent latency that, although small, does make a difference. That's my biggest gripe with the software clones like the B4. No matter what you do, you're going to have latency and it just doesn't feel right. Even 1ms, although tiny, doesn't feel right because a real Hammond has no latency. Quote
Soul Stream Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Jim, I have an XK-2 that I use on non-jazz, non-bass gigs occassionally. I hate that thing. It doesn't sound worth a damn to me. The percussion isn't right, chorus/vibrato sucks, it's too bright and has no depth. I've heard the New B3 sounds exactly like an original. Matter of fact, Tony Monaco uses one on his blues album along with a real B3 and I couldn't tell the difference. THAT'S amazing to me. Is the XK3 use the same technology as the NEW B3? It would be nice to have an equivilant of the B3, but only if it is really that. Quote
sheldonm Posted February 5, 2006 Author Report Posted February 5, 2006 Just stopped back in to the Jazz Kitchen a few minutes ago and ran into Joe G. Chatted for a bit, it seems as though he likes Monaco's playing....said something about replacing the b3 player in his current band . Place was pretty full as it was last night. Talked with Tony for a few minutes, gave him a couple prints from last nights show...very nice guy. Joe was givin' tips to the guitar player.... I'll keep bugging management until they get you guys in there. m~ Quote

I bought the Roland instead (which has crappy chorus/vibrato too). Quote

Gave me a big hug when I introduced myself and said he's been hearing our name more and more, and said, "I'm prayin' for you guys". We traded CDs; his new one, out next week, is a trio with Adam Nussbaum and Bruce Foreman. Haven't had a chance to listen yet, but how can you lose with those guys? Oh yeah, he also mentioned me and organissimo ("a great band") from the stage in the second set - precisely at the moment I had reached the bathroom door at the other end of the room. How did I know that would happen? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 He sounds like a real nice cat... hopefully I'll meet up with him in the near future. I saw he had a new one coming out with Adam Nussbaum on it... I'd love to hear it. Quote

rachel Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 (edited) What a lovely person Tony Monaco is, in addition to giving a killer performance. He was very affectionate and enthusiastic when he spoke of organissimo. He was mentioning musical influences and friends from the past and segued into speaking about today's musicians. He referred to organissimo as 'great friends and an outstanding organ trio' and said he was so happy to have Joe G. in the crowd. He encouraged everyone in the crowd to check organissimo out. After gauging the crowd's response to both sets, I have no doubt that organissimo would be nothing short of successful at the Jazz Kitchen. As someone mentioned on Tony's website guestbook, Indy is full of "B3-starved fans". Hopefully Indy will have the opportunity to experience organissimo firsthand--if not at the Jazz Kitchen then hopefully at the Indy Jazz Fest...(but I still believe that room was made for organissimo...) Joe G Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 Thanks, Rachel. I'm sure we'll get to play in Indy soon. Hopefully it will be the Kitchen; it's a very nice room, and just the kind of space we tend to thrive in. Quote

Jazz Kat Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Tony Monaco has to be the best organist to come since Jimmy Smith. He's got it covered! He plays like a mutha! Anyone get the new album? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Tony's a great player and the new album is nice, but is he "the best to come since Jimmy Smith"? Not in my book! Quote
