Why did Colonel Warden shoot his own men?

I recently watched this movie for the first time (and dug it a lot), but have a question about the ending. Near the end two guys get shot during the sabotage mission, and my presumption was that they were shot by the Japanese soldiers. But then all of a sudden Col. Warden says, "I had to shoot them, they could have talked." Was this intended to be a surprise or did I miss something important? Why did he shoot them, didn't he want the mission to succeed?

Anyway, the movie is highly recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it.

He shoots them because he's become obsessed with the completion of the bridge. Even though he *should* sabotage the bridge, he doesn't want to because he no longer thinks of it as belonging to the Japanese. It belongs to *him* and he wants to protect it.

I think you are confusing Colonel Warden (one of the participants in the sabotage mission) w/Colonel Nicholson (the POW commander).

You're right, I was. Sorry.

I always assumed he just didn't want the now injured men falling into enemy hands and talking about the vast spy network/commando unit they were a part of.

Just watched it now? Damn...I have no idea how many times I've seen this movie! :g
