Guest akanalog Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 there is a new rypdal on ECM. it might be live? i think it is a tribue to "bitches brew" era miles stuff? anyone hear it? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=20615 a review from mr. kelman. he likes it a lot. i think rypdal just got some sort of lifetime achievement award in norway or something. it would be cool if ECM would honor him by reissuing "odyssey" as a 2 CD set so we could get "rolling stone" on CD. Guest akanalog Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 and to continue having a conversation with myself, i recently purchased "what comes after", rypdal's second album. this is one of the good albums that ECM doesn't make available in north america for some stupid reason. but it is really good and worth checking out. john christensen, barre phillips and some norweigan players on oboe and e-bass. some miles-influenced bass ostinato things and also some more introspective stuff which actually really works nicely because rypdal plays some acoustic and christensen even moving to organ at points. usually i don't like this kind of thing, but these phillips compostions have very nice melodies. rypdal also lays off the really cheezy sustained electric tone he can sometimes use (like on "after the rain"). 7/4 Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 I'm looking forward to checking it out. Who's carrying it in NYC? Virgin? DMG? Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 are you asking that question in a serious fashion or is there humor involved in your query? Quote
7/4 Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 are you asking that question in a serious fashion or is there humor involved in your query? ECM has - in recent years - had distribution problems in the US and releases, even if they're new, can be hard to find. Quote

kh1958 Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 I like Rypdal alot, especially in a small group context. I'm definitely getting this one. Quote
Guest akanalog Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 you mean small compared to an orchestra? because it looks like this group is at least 7 or 8 deep..... Quote

Seven or eight is a small group to me. I do like some of his orchestral music also, at least as long as he is playing guitar with the orchestra. Quote
Aggie87 Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 On my first spin of this, and liking what I hear - very atmospheric! Anyone who likes Bitches Brew and electric era Miles will probably like this one! Quote
Aggie87 Posted April 2, 2006 Report Posted April 2, 2006 Can't wait to hear this sucker. I have it on good authority that this will be on the Rypdal Mosaic 8 disc box Chuck. You might wait for that. Quote
tonym Posted April 3, 2006 Report Posted April 3, 2006 Sounds good....I might pick this up soon (as well as the later ECM Rava's which I've been wanting for a while -- see how business is over the next few months!). From what I heard on Litania, Rypdal has charisma alright. did you say he'll be playing Barre Phillips compostions? Luckily in the UK, we have Music Connection who provide ECMs at around £12 inc. delivery. Quote
