From the Jazzmatazz newsletter, I saw that Henry Threadgill and Zooid listed for a rare performance on Friday, March 17th at the International House in Philadelphia. I am likely to be there that day on business and might try to stay overnight, catch the show, and return to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Any idea about what the venue is like? Tickets are available through Ticket Web, but I would prefer to wait closer to the date of the performance to make sure that I will be available that night. Also, would recommend any suggestions as to reasonably priced hotels for that night and access to airport for the next morning.

If any Philly jazz fans are planning on going to the show, I would love to meet you.

Thanks.

I'm going. I've received two emails in the past week from the promoter(Ars Nova Workshop) saying that they were quite confident that the show would sell out. It was supposed to be the last show in tribute series to 40 years of the AACM(They have added two more shows in May.) And the other shows have been pretty well attended but I don't think any of them have sold out (Maybe the Braxton.) I wouldn't wait too long though.

Venue is a little theatre in the International House. The sound is fine, aesthetically... it's okay I guess if you're into the New Brutalism architecture style that was popular on college campuses back in the 60's/70's. There's a Shearaton about a block away. You can get a "deal" if you click on the I House link. And if you want to save a few bucks there's always the Divine Tracy Hotel right around the corner from the IH.

If you want something nearby that's a bit more upscale, there's also The Inn at Penn. Not sure how their rates compare to the Sheraton, but it may be worth checking out. If you want to stay in Center City, Society Hill, or Old City, there's obviously a lot more.

Well the reason why I did not include that one is that the Inn is undergoing a $9 million renovation right now do to mold. Yuck.

What shows were added for May?

When I doubled checked they(Ars Nova Workshop) have only added one show for the AACM series - Malachi Thompson's Freebop Band. The other show I was thinking of is a Sonny Fortune/Rasheid Ali gig sometime in May as well.

Oooops. In that case, I withdraw my recommendation. On the other hand, you might be able to get a really terrific rate on a room there.
